Overclocking on the DFI-Ultra D
Looking for up to a 1 Gb. to start off working on my system...

Plus one question, does the amount of RAM specify or control the amount of overclocking or how high you can go?

Ive heard that using 2x512 is best for OCing, but from expeience I cant confirm this, right this second Im using 2x1GB and I have my Opty 165@2.95. Ive had good expereinces with the OCZ line, Ive also had good experience with G.Skill. For Ocing try to get higher bandwidth RAM (ie.G.Skill DDR 500). Ive used G.Skill DDR 600 and it worked great.

The best memory in my opinion Samsung TCCD or Winbond BH-5 based memory modules which can do DDR500+ speeds. The BH-5 needing highish voltage to do tight timings which the DFI boards can cope with (upto 4.0v!)

Memory only becomes a problem for your CPU overclock when running 1:1. If you use the boards memory dividers this will not inpact upon your overclock.

I don't understand why you don't just get 2GB?

Anyway. The amount of RAM in the case of the original BH-5 chips did change overclocking. It's more common to see 2 x 256mb BH-5 in the 300Mhz at 2.2.2.5 (or lower). The 2 x 512mb sticks were more often getting to 280Mhz, with similar timings. Records were set using 2 x 256mb.

Problems with BH-5:
Low availability
Expensive (I sold mine for £75 ($143).
Requires high voltage, which increases heat, and increases possibility of them having a short life.

TCCD is great, requires high timings to get the Mhz though. It is easy too see these in the 280-300Mhz range if you get some good chips.

Problems:
High Timings mean a high latency
Expensive
Low availability

In my opinion, get whichever is the cheapest, they are both great. And definitly get the 2 x 512mb, 1gb of RAM is pretty much standard now.

(In my more honest opinion, I would get 2GB cheap RAM, and just use dividers. Personnally I think BH-5 and TCCD are way too overpriced.)

wasn't there a problem w/ TCCD on the DFI motherboards? i remember something about it, i think...........

i have TCCD and i <3 it very much. you have to raise your timings some, but it requires not much more voltage and you can get some really high overclocks. i had mine at DDR630 when i was just messing around at relatively loose timings (2.5-4-4-7 2t) @ 2.75v. But i don't have much experience w/ bh-5, so....

I def agree, u really should look into getting a 2x1GB kit, esp if your a gamer. However I def would not buy a cheap 2GB kit, go for at least a midrange kit, it will leave you more OCing room (esp with adjusting timings)

Hopefully your current RAM is the xxxxxxxxx.16tg and should do you well, just don't over volt them. 2.9v is the max but preferably 2.8-2.85 if necessary.

The smaller the modules the better they OC, but volume is beconimg more of a necessity. Whether your Ballistix is DDR400 or DDR500 either should do atleast 260MHz.
DDR400, try cas2.5-3-4-8 @ 2.8v and see how high they run stable.
Regardless or the extreem max OCing of the RAM, a good OC of them and a bit of a divider and they should do you well.

i just got the 2g of ballistix ddr500, i only can go 249mhz. unstable to go 250.
11x 249mhz = 2.74 ghz. and i have to run DDR400 3-3-3-8, 2.8v on ram and 1.6v on cpu. TEMP Idle:33c and Fuly Load :54c.
can u please help me to get my speed higher?

Like the Duke said if you have the 16TG Ballistix you have some great ram..Dont over-volt as has been pointed out, it doesn't help much with this Micron...You might want to put a fan on them to they run hot...

To tell which one you have look at the box they came in or a sticker on the ram..Bl64647402 16TG is the Micron-5B-G...It's the killer ram....
