i7 930 or 2600k

Thread Starter
Hey OCN, a couple weeks ago I sold my 2500k to upgrade to a 2600k. I accidentally messed up some of the pins on my MOBO while unscrewing a top fan, so there's about 6 or 7 pins that are not in their correct spot. I tried getting a refurbished board from ASUS, saying they'd send me an email to me last wed, its Tuesday, still no email, so I doubt it's going to happen. I can get a mobo + i7 930 for about 200. Will it have somewhat good performance? I'll be doing live streaming / video rendering / recording a lot. How much different is the i7 930 to the 2600k?

Per MHz, the 2600k is about 5-10% faster. It'll also overclock better.

Day-to-day, however, you'll never notice a thing.

Most will tell you to get the 2600k, but the i7 930 is a great chip with lots of power- just a little outdated and unsupported.

I would spend the extra and get the 2600k platform, plus they overclock like crazy with not much effort.

Have you tried fixing the pins on your old board?

Also, never leave the socket exposed, always put the cover back over it when there is no CPU installed.

I don't think I can spend that much on a $300 budget, unless I can find really good deals somewhere tongue.gif

I learned that the hard way rolleyes.gif
I have tried fixing them, but I don't have a CPU to test if it will work. I can spend several hours fixing it myself, but like I said, no CPU.

Hey pwndupure,

I have been using an i7 930 since it was released and I've been really happy with it. It's on an ASUS P6X58D-prem., if that helps with anything. Back in the day, that CPU plus that mobo was $600! That's how it goes with computers though, the newest, greatest thing, will be outdated the next day. That doesn't mean it won't perform well, though.

I was able to overclock it to 3.6ghz, stable, using an aftermarket heatsink. I can't remember the model of the heatsink, but you can probably find a better one nowadays anyway. Most newer heatsinks are still 1366 compatible. Send me a message if you get the 930 and would like to see my BIOS settings.

I've already got a unused hyper 212+, any clue how far that will take me OC wise? I love to OC for no reason at all tongue.gif
If the i7 930 + that mobo i'm trying to get is still available, i'll hop on that thumb.gif then probobly get a refurbished p67 and sell it somewhere. If not, i'm in trouble and have to find good deals!

Edit- Looking at this, the 2600k looks far superior, even on stock clocks. Is it just worth it trying to fix the pins and going for the 2600k?
