[Sketchup] PC Desk Mod..

7/18/2012 Revised, mostly new desk:

I took the liberty to sort of start fresh but keep the same ideas and try to improve on some things.

New desk as it were to sit in a room.

Fan controller and a generic spot for a LED controller. I'm well aware that I would need extensions for both the fans and LEDS to get them there but its really the better place to put it.

Things not pictured but would be installed:
  • Brackets for just about everything, PSU, SSD, fans, slot load drive, LED controller and fan controller.
  • Ledge for removeable top with window to sit on.
  • Hinges and locks for the panel underneath and panel on the backside.
  • Some type of grommets for holes on top by monitors.
  • Maybe some type of mesh for the intake fans, as of right now, I don't see putting them on there as I dont' have kids or anything that could harm themselves from the fans but I understand it will allow dust and everything else in but I don't see a problem with cleaning this.

I don't put HDD anywhere because I plan for those to be in my HTPC. However, if need be, i could make a rack system where the SSD currently is to hold more than one hard drive.

The one last thing I for see is all the "wasted" space that is underneath the monitors. Although this space will be used to hide the monitors cables and cables for the cd rom, led, and fan controller, it will generally will go unused. I could have the right side open up to store some games and the mouse but I'll use a wireless keyboard and mouse to keep it tidy on the desk.
If the wireless and keyboard mouse fail to keep up I can always mod the section where the fan controller is and drill a hole big enough to run the cables through. Anyway..check out the photos and let me know if this has gotten better or worse, i'm keeping the first design down below for reference. Again, feedback is good and if I haven't *really* solved anything let me know. Negative feedback is still better than no feedback. Thanks!

ORIGINAL POST:

Right now this is only in design stage. I don't have the money at the moment to put this together so I'll put it down as "eventually".

Let me know what you think. The second to last photo is a cutaway of the motherboard box. You'll see a 3/4 gap underneath the motherboard for all the wires. I realize I don't have cutouts for monitor cables but its a work in progress. Just thought I'd get feedback as far as what people think and/or any issues I could potentially run into. This is setup for an H100 to go in there.

Looks like a waste of desk space to me.. I like to have nothing on my desk apart from the keyboard/mouse. You should mount the displays to the back of the desk imo.

You really dont want to have fans like right on the desk because you will here them, you should try and have them on the sides and underneath.

Well its JUST for being on the computer. So having more than whats there seems like just empty space for nothing.

I agree with the displays being mounted to the back of the desk, that would look alot cleaner.

The fans would/will have brackets made from aluminum that should set them about 1/4" off the wood. I forgot to build those in sketchup, sorry!

looks like a decent start of the design. As was mentioned i would make all the fans rear or bottom facing so you don't have the noise etc. The other question i had; is it going to be a solid section under the monitors or will it be hollow for storage/shelf space? It's a lot of wasted space if it's solid.

What noise would there be? Vibration against the wood?

Underneath would be storage for the keyboard mouse and random desk accessories. I would like to raise my monitors that height..maybe I just build it like a shelf and leave the underneath open?

I don't know about all these desk mods. It's all good until you need a bigger/smaller or different type of desk. I prefer a pc that can be easily moved. Nice design though, love to see how it would come together.

It's 70x30 and should fit through any standard doorway. I would still have a comp case for any type of LAN.

Thanks I'm still trying to really work out final details. I need to find better usage for the space under the monitors..

Let me warn you about leaving space under the monitors. Crap accumulates there if it's not tall enough. My last desk was JUST tall enough for crap to get shoved up underneath the overhand but not tall enough to be useful.

This is just spitballing to possibly get other ideas rolling:
You might want to make the space under the monitors an airbox. Reorient your mobo and have the fans drawing from one side (far right?) through filters, and then out the far other. Especially if you watercooled the computer and had rads at the far left edge.

What about speakers in the wood? Like the speakers used for cars built into the wood shelf thing.

If I were to wall mount, or mount them to the back of the desk, the monitors and get rid of that center and far right box and maybe rearrange the left one, do you think that would help?

I made some revisions:

279
415
413

The red portion (which won't actually be red, just painted that way to explain) will actually be raised 3/4 of an inch from the desk. Purpose being I can slide and hide all my cables underneath everything without them ever having to been seen outside the desk. There will be a hatch underneath you can open to get them through all of the grommets.

The second picture you'll see a back cutout for the monitor cables to go through and they would be mounted (in some sort of fashion, I just did a quick mockup of something) to the back of the desk. Any better or still a little weird?
