I don't think d3 deserves anywhere near the amount of hate it gets from people. I think it's just a bit too hard for them towards the end and they cant be bothered with the challenge, so they complain.

Have to agree.

Fallout 3, like Skyrim/Oblivion, but as an FPS
Diablo 2, its a classic if you can get over how dated the game is. It can be tough to play an old game you have no childhood connection to.
Guild Wars 2 looks incredible, a real breath of fresh air for the MMO genre, but it is probably the most different from your requested styles
As for Diablo 3, to be civil about it, the game certainly attracts a certain type of gamer and they are enjoying themselves. Personally, I wouldn't play the game if Blizzard shipped it to me for free with a $50 bill inside. The game makes me sad.

I've played the Fallouts but didn't mention it as I'm not looking for a shooter. I've played most of the shooters out there. I'll also look into Diablo 2. It sounds like what I'm looking for.

I almost bought Magicka for my son. Seemed like it was geared towards kids from what I saw but I'll give it another look.

Diablo 3 is the wrong kind of challege for me. Enrage timers, tiered gear, and the current itemization just adds a TIME barrier instead of a SKILL barrier and completely removes motivation for creative problem solving.

For example, some very difficult fights and their solutions in D2:
-Gloams: Slow them down with frost from merc skills, or your skills, or gear with +frost charges, or merc gear, switch to tgods belt or light res gear, or kite them to corner/zigzagging hallway so they can't all hit you at once
-Nitty: Corpse explosion did insane damage and ended many a rookie HC character, so prevent corpses. Wisp ring or pally aura for slain monsters rest in peace, or gear with +raise skeleton/CE and use them yourself before he can get them
-Resistances: merc skills, item skill charges, spells that convert magic to physical or visa versa, back up elemental weapons (bstar or oathbringer) for physical immunes, conviction aura, lower resist gear
-Enemies with tons of health - static field or static field charges or chance to cast static field gear, smiters, crushing blow items with high attack speed on you or your merc

Playing through the game solo put you in tough situations but gave you loads of tools to mix as match as you needed to get past whatever you are stuck on. Playing through with just one friend changed how you built a character because you could make impressive combos with two characters and two mercs. Playing online with 8 people allowed even more specialization and this is where cookie cutter max damage builds starting showing up (saddly, the ones most people are familiar with when they complain about D2 builds). PVP changed up builds and gear as well, with some really difficult and unorthodox builds winning over the cookie cutters, little known to most people who just took their boring hammerdins and trappers into pvp.

All of that got boiled down in D3 to 3 letters, D P S. (And mitigation to a lesser degree, but that doesn't sound as dramatic)

He did say in his original post that he played both Witcher-games, but I fully agree, you can't claim to love RPG's / Medieval themed games without having played TW 1&2 smile.gif
As for Darksiders, I don't think it really bears any similarity to the games originally listed, even if it was indeed a pretty nice action game.
Bastion's a little gem of an RPG though, definitely worth having a look at! smile.gif

Divine Divinity just relaunched on stream, remastered for high resolutions. It's $6 and provides like 100+ hours of gameplay the first time through. Just don't buy it if you are expecting a 100% serious game, the game constantly makes fun of itself by design.

It's old, but one of the best RPGs I've played. Has a few issues, like lots of ways to break side quests due to the "free roam" aspect.

Oh, how about Dungeon Defenders? It's a loot RPG and tower defence game smashed into one. I bought 4 copies on steam for like $20 and gave them out to my friends. We had a good time with that game and easily got more than our monies worth.

Here's a second vote for magicka. You can play with an out-to-win mindset in single player and enjoy the hell out of it, play the challenges, and there's plenty of cheap, cheap DLC. As a matter of fact if you watch steam the whole pack will occasionally go on a 75% sale and cost you about 14-15 bucks.

Multiplayer is just mayhem. So much fun.

I always forget to recommend magicka because people get cranky about the mechanics of it, but it's just so much fun.
