Which runs hotter, 35X or D5?

Thread Starter
I'm looking at the XSPC bay-res for a single DDC or another XSPC bay-res for D5. Which of these two pumps runs the hottest? I've tried researching it and see conflicting information. Both pumps will be attached to a bay-res, using two 5.25" bays in my case. As a side note, I like the PWM feature of the 35X, which I assume would run slower (due to less CPU load) and therefore run cooler, but I don't want to assume that. I like PWM, but not if the pump runs hotter than a constant speed D5. Thanks.

My 35X runs pretty cool if it's not at full speed. At 4500rpm it gets rather hot. Consider acquiring a heatsink for the DDC pump.

The PCB of the DDC pumps (MCP35-) run hotter than the D5 style pumps.

However the DDC uses less power than the D5, and therefore heats the water less (remember that temperaure != heat).

Although I am far from being any sort of expert, and I am still working out the details of my own loop, I did decide to go with the MCP35X pump due to the very high pressure which should allow for more components to be added with a smaller loss of flow. It does seem like the 35X runs a bit hotter at full blast, but it is a PWM pump so normally it shouldn't be running at full. I personally decided, after much deliberation, to forego a bay res and grabbed the Swiftech MCRES-Ver2 and am going to attempt to mount it directly to the pump via a male-male extender fitting (I like the XSPC 5mm one, and the Bitspower Rotary version is nice as well but not as cheap as the $2 XSPC model...), but I don't know if this can or should be done :/
I am also going to grab the MCP35X heatsink from Jab Tech as it's not expensive ($13 I believe) and I feel like it has a few benefits: lower operating temp (longer life + less heat dumped into loop), elevated stand, mount for 80mm fan (of which I have plenty), and I like the looks...

Hope that helps some!

I like the D5 pump, its been running for 4 years full speed with no problems and its quiet. Dont know much about the new wave pumps but you got to wonder why they run so hot and need a heatsink on them to keep them cool. If the pump runs quiet to start with why do you need PWM, sounds like more of a selling gimmick.

Im a D5 fan, cool, quiet and longer lived than the DDC

Thanks for the replies. So it sounds like the D5 is a cool running pump but at a constant speed, while the 35X is hotter but only at or near maximum speed? Although the 35X being PWM, it shouldn't be running at maximum speed most of the time anyway, therefore meaning it shouldn't be running that hot. It makes me wonder, if it's not such a problem then why does Swiftech offer a heat-sink for it, but not the D5?!

The 35X puts out the heat on the PCB, the D5 puts the heat into the water.

With the D5, would any heat in the water would be cooled down by going through a radiator before it got to the CPU block?

With this in mind, the D5 has a better lifespan. My vote is for the D5 as well, though it's biased since I use one.

Go for what looks cleaner or uses less tubing. Loop order does not matter, aside from having your pump "primed" or filled with water while you start adding water/bleeding your loop, you usually want the res before the pump intake.
