How much power do I need

Thread Starter
Been a very long time since i've bought a PSU, and now that I'm considering going from full tower (Haf X) down to ITX (Prodigy) I'm probably gonna have to get rid of my 850w, non modular psu (nicknamed Medusa). I don't need excess power "just in case," because with GPU's being as powerful as they are these days, I have no need for multiple, my 1 7970 does just fine.

Here's what's going to be going into my potential new build:

Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe Mini ITX Motherboard
Intel Core i7 2600K
16GB DDR3-1866 Ram (G.Skill ARES 1.5v)
HIS Radeon HD 7970 ref.
1 SSD
2-3 HDD's
1 Blu-Ray Drive
Several fans + an H60

And yes, I do overclock both CPU, and GPU.

I'm most likely going to go with a Corsair HX series psu.

Would the HX650 be enough for my needs?

A HX650 would be plenty for everything there.
More than enough, you'd be fine on a good 500 watt PSU.
No.. you need at least 1200 watt! It's a high end card, after all.

Just kidding, I find 650 watt to be a bit overkill. If you can get your hands on a 500-550 watt PSU that is of higher quality for the same price go for it. If you're a bit nervous then get the 650 watt, but dont get more than that, it would be really useless.

Just dont buy a no-name PSU and you will be fine.

EDIT : If you're still not sure, http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-7970-ghz-edition-review/8
Just keep in mind that they are using ''worst case scenario'' in their testing.

Haha thanks guys. Cool. I haven't bought a new psu since I was using an nvidia 680i mobo w/ sli'd 8800 series cards (GT's and GTS(G92)'s ). I'm actually a little suprised medusa is still kickin.

Also i'd grab a Seasonic instead of a corsair. (afaik, some of the corsair's PSU are only rebranded seasonics.)

650 is probably more than you need, but a good AX650 or Seasonic X-650 would be great to be able to detach all the extra cables and possibly sleeve them in the future.
HX650 is outdated and way overpriced, and the other HX units wouldn't fit. I'd either go relatively cheap with a M12II 520W:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151093

or maybe NZXT Hale82 650W if you want something better than the HX650:
http://www.directron.com/hale82650m.html

or upgrade to Corsair AX / Seasonic X Series.

There would be more options if you're okay with a non-modular power supply. There aren't too many 160mm and under modular power supplies worth getting. In fact, many are Seasonic OEM, like all the ones I listed, but there's also those Enhance units like the Silverstone Strider Plus 750W and so on.

Ah wait a sec, Corsair TX-M is also 160mm.
