having some trouble with my SSD

Thread Starter
hi there i was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas of what might be wrong with my SSD.

What is happening is that just recently (a day or two ago) it started shutting down on me.

It usually happens when i'm not at my computer, when its just sitting for a little while. I come back to a black screen that says "please connect proper boot device or insert proper boot media" (something very similar to that anyways)

Once i hold down the power button to shut the system off, and turn it back on, it works again.

If it does it while i'm actually on the computer, usually the system will freeze up on me with whatever i'm doing, and I have to power it down, but usually when i restart it loads up fine.

it only seems to give me that message about a boot drive when i'm not at the computer, and it shuts down on its own, otherwise if i'm at the computer its just a system freeze and the restart fixes it.

the steps i've taken are to clean out my system of dust really good, checked all cables and connections.

I followed almost all the steps in the FAQ sticky in the system freezing section, my drivers are up to date, i've done the scandisk thing etc etc

anyone able to tell me whats going on here and if i can fix it?

i'm kind of worried that my SSD is just failing on me. Its a crucial M4 128GB

thanks to anyone who can help.

Reset the bios to default.
See if it still happens.
Is it a fresh install of windows?

One more symptom that just happened as i posted that was that i got an error about my google drive sync, i closed that, closed my browser and my whole desktop was empty only my computer and control panel shortcuts were still there, i was heading to work so i just shutdown, got a bunch more errors for various applications before it shut down but was in a hurry so dont know exactly what they were.

Did you try running a scan disc for errors via command prompt?
Also, run a virus scan on the SSD.
Then, update all motherboard/chipset drivers and so on.
I am just wanting to rule out simple stuff before moving on to the nitty gritty.

I also am having a major problem with my SSD. I am going through an RMA process with plextor at the moment. I was told by by Plextor tech support to run this:

This is an app for the SMART read out of how your SSD is doing , I took it as some kind of health status meter for the drive. I have not run it yet as I am waiting for the enclosure I ordered to be able run the app on my SSD, so YMMV. I hope this helps you with your problem.

Is your firmware up to date? Open AS SSD and it will show the firmware in the top left box. It should be 0309 or 000F.

Please update it if not: http://www.overclock.net/t/1241906/crucial-m4-000f-firmware-is-out

I'm thinking there could be an issue with the windows installation rather than a SSD problem.

I'm thinking it is the firmware as that select proper boot device issue was fixed with newer firmware for the M4.

But he's not had the issue until now? Worth a try though! Go for it. OP do you know how to update firmware?
