When the post is submitted, the multiquote selection disappears. Tested on FF 13 and Chrome - wondering if this is perhaps restricted to older browser versions? (not that 12 is super old, but I can't get it to happen in 13)
If I'm missing a step, let me know?
I think you got everything covered. I will test this in a few minutes with a thread in the normal public forums and then I'll edit this post with the results.
I will also post the results of this multi-quoted post as well.
Edit: these quotes are still selected.
Edit #3: Good news. See Edit #2 below!

It affects usability quite a bit. Every time I go back to the thread to post another reply (that is, when someone posts something new that I want to respond to), all of the multi-quotes are still selected and so they still show up.

I feel that it would be far more user-friendly if we had a one-click option to clear all multi-quotes. So let's say that I multi-quote everything and then I decide for some reason that I would rather not reply to the thread at all, but let's say that I'm tired and I don't want to deselect them all one by one. Now let's also say that an hour or 2 later I see a new post that causes me to post a reply to just that one new post. Well now I have all of those multi-quoted posts sitting there in addition to this new post. If I had a very clear option sitting out in the open somewhere that allows me to deselect all multi-quotes in that thread with one click, then I'd use it.
I would also like an option somewhere that deselects all of my multi-quotes globally. When we had vBulletin, this was very easy: just go to a random thread that I do not have any multi-quotes in, click "POST REPLY", and then click the little link that enables me to deselect all of the multi-quotes I have selected from other threads. I don't remember what the text was, but I remember that it was like it was saying, "Hey, you have posts selected from other threads. You can click here to deselect all of them". So, I used that little workaround trick as a "one-click" option to deselect all of them. It was slightly inconvenient, but I loved that I at least had that option.
I think that clearing the editor isn't intuitive; it doesn't give me any indication that clearing the editor would also deselect all of the multi-quotes. So a feature or option needs to be added somewhere for this that's hard to miss.
Edit #2: Oh nice. Using the "Clear the Editor" button in the, what we would call "quick reply" editor works. However, I still say that we need a separate one-click option or feature that has a name that makes everyone know without a doubt that it will deselect all of their multi-quotes in that thread. In addition, there should be another one next to it that deselects all multi-quotes globally. So, I'm saying that it would be less user-friendly to have a dialog box come up with an option to choose between deselecting quotes from just that thread, or globally. It would be best to have a one-click option for both (well, 2-click since there would have to be an "Are you sure?" confirmation).
