Fan Silencers and Screws

Thread Starter
I'm looking to buy a couple fan silencers and possibly some rubber screws to see which works best at getting rid of the fan noise in my rig but I had a couple questions before buying anything.

I plan on getting a fan silencer that's 7mm thick since I assume that will do a better job at dampening vibrations than a 2mm thick silencer would but would a standard fan screw still be able to go that entire length and still screw into the fan? If not, would I be able to use some other screws, say the long rubber screws for closed chassis fans for example, to screw them in with the fan silencer?

I think if you go with rubber/silicon screws, you could probably go without the silencer. Both are designed to decouple the fan from the case and reduce vibration. When using rubber screws, just remember to make sure that there is a little room between them and the case. I would go with the ones like the Nexus brand that advertise soft silicon:

http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/std/sku=nexus_fan_mounts.html

I am not 100% sure, but I think the silicon type silencers really came into use when metal screws were about the only option. Since then, there are quite a few varieties of silicon screws/pins that became available.

As was noted above, there is no point in getting silencers if you will get rubber screws, which tend to be preferable. The best (softest) quality I have found are the Gelid (these are more forgiving than Nexus in my experience):

Eh, I think I'd rather test which works better myself. I've heard about how (insert component here) is silent and then when I use it myself, it's nowhere near quiet. Also, I don't plan on using them both on the same fan however I'll need to use the rubber screws for some fans and would like to give the silencers a shot as well.

Also, while I appreciate your thoughts on the best rubber screws, I'm pretty sure those are strictly for open chassis fans. Most of my fans are closed chassis and I'd prefer to avoid spending even more money to get a dremel and turning them into open chassis fans.

You can get closed chassis fans rubber screws as well. Check out the selection at frozencpu.com or performance-pcs.com

With regard to your comments about silence, I completely understand and share your view. Most people think silence is not making you go deaf. If you are serious about silence, I would suggest registering at silentpcreview.com and posting there with inquiries.

I know, I was just mentioning that the rubber screws you find to be the best wouldn't work with the majority of my fans. I'll think about heading over to SPCR but for now I'll just buy some rubber fan screws, 2mm and 7mm thick fan silencers, in 120 and 140mm both, made out of silica gel and rubber respectively. Then I'll report back here with what I've found works best, assuming they help at all. smile.gif
