Two water-loop designs for my first build

Thread Starter
I'm looking at one of these two designs for my first water-cooling loop. Note, the first uses XSPC's new Crossflow radiator, I'm not sure whether it's an advantage/disadvantage over the regular radiator where both ports are at one side. There will be a bay-res + pump (D5 or 35X, not decided yet) installed in 2 x 5.25" bays. For drainage I'm thinking of a T-line, the fillport is in the bay-res. Any flaws in this?

it is 6 or 2 threes in difference in loop configuration. only concern is that the cross-flow
doesn't allow the coolant to stay in the radiator as long as the U-style radiator. the
cross-flow allows single pass, as the other is double pass. i had't needed to use a
cross-flow, so i can't really comment from use.
i looked at your measurement from the roof line to the MOSFET heatsink and don't belive
it'll fit with a fan and radiator inside, unless the roof mount is offset to the left... is it
center-set or offset? you'd need a minimum of 60mm to clear MOSFET 'sinks.

I've no idea which radiator is best, I've yet to put more research into it. I thought the new crossflow radiator from XSPC may help require less tubing, but the difference may only be marginal - the choice was to minimise tubing, not necessarily for performance.

For fan & radiator on this case (the Silverstone TJ04-E), I'm in luck because the top 2 x 120mm mounts are offset to the side opposite of the motherboard. In any other case it would hit the MOSFET heat-sinks at the top of the board, but with this case it'll hover over them. Thanks for pointing this out.

Different question, who's the best make for a T-line fitting?

Either way will work fine. Loop order really doesn't matter as long as the reservoir is directly feeding into the pump. What directions are those fans going to be running? You could also try to pinch the top of the case between a second set of fans and the radiator. I did that with my old HAF922 and it worked quite well.

The fans will be setup for positive pressure, i.e. pulling air from the outside over the radiator to the inside of the case. I have to put fans against the top of the case first because there's metal L-lips on the top of case, only fans against the case can clear them, a radiator wouldn't be able to [sit flush against the case].

i commend you in thinking of a drain port, but at this point of the game, your system can be assembled and removed from the case
in one assembly. and then drained or rechecked outside the case. check this out on a water loop install

While his set up does allow for him to completely remove the loop it is still quite a bit of extra work. I like how he looked ahead and fitted that in. As long as you have an easy way to fill it then you should be good to go.

Check out koolance's radiator fan studs, they might make your life a lot easier! http://koolance.com/radiator-mounting-screw-and-nut-25mm

they're M4 threads, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem

Thanks. The plan is to use the fillport on the top of the XSPC 5.25" bay-res, then use the T-line to drain it. For coolant I'm thinking of going with EK Coolant clear.

No definitely don't go with EK coolant... All you need is distilled water and a silver kill coil.
