Should i trade my 6950 for 2xgtx 295 (quad sli)? - Page 2

He said the main reason was power usage, it uses over 700 watt (!!!) instead the little usage of my 6950.

I also forgot to mention that the 6950 runs at 6970 speeds (shaders clocks) But i dont think that matters any.

As i said before im from holland, a normal gtx 295 is sold for 90-100 euro's. A 6950 with aftermarket cooler is sold for 200 euro's so the price is quite fair.

Some reviews i read about sli is that i can only keep 896 mb even when i use 2 cards, is this true becouse the specs for a gtx 295 say 1792Mb.

My God! Lose Dx11? No way don't do it

Do you like to play games that use dx11?

^Seriously, that and absolutely no room for expansion. Outdated card is outdated.

That 1792MB is total card memory so yea, like the reviews stated you only have half that addressable/available. 700w draw to go with easy vram choke, that sounds painful.

I never realy knew anything about dx11, i switch cards very often, but im thinking to keep these cards for a longer time. In the time i switched alot some dx10 cards came by, but i never saw any difference, could someone explain the main reason why i should keep dx11 (pro's/con's)?

Yes, but what that last part means is that its 896mb per GPU, since the gtx 295 is a dual GPU card, the same applies in SLI, you can't add ram when doing SLI.

SLI requires VRAM for each GPU to be mirrored, so you won't have more than 896 MB of VRAM, which is a huge downgrade for both BF3 and Crysis 2.

Really, even though you get more graphics power, you won't have enough VRAM to make use of it effectively, and the loss of dx11 means a lot of games will look worse and perform worse.
Then, there's microstutter and SLI compatibility, and the fact that the GTX 295 is now 3 years old.

Unlocked 6950 is 200w tdp, fairly quick card, plays most everything at decent framerate given realistic iq settings, and has plenty of vram! It has displayports, hdmi, 2 dvi. It is uber flexible. You sure trading for a power hungry dinosaur is a smart move?

Pro's/con's so far:

Pro's:

Still alot of firepower, but not as many as i tought.
A high brute factor, Quad sli sounds very brute.

Con's

Power usage
Heath
Dx10
Low v-ram

There are very different posts here, some say do it and some say don't, I came here to make up my mind smile.gif
