i7-3770k Temperature Concerns

Thread Starter
So I just built my computer this past weekend, and I'm in love with it! I haven't built a computer since 2004, so you can kinda guess on how much I needed to catch up on. I picked up the i7-3770k CPU and it is very fast! No need to overclock just yet, but I'm starting to get concerned about the temperatures. At idle with the ambient temperature right now being 88*F, the cores are at about 39-43*C. Earlier today I ran Prime95 to just to see what my temps would be at max load, and the cores were at about 70*C (sometimes going up to 7*C1 or 72*C, but they were running from 67*C-70*C more often) with the ambient temperature being at 80*F. I have yet to find another cooler that can clear those comfortably. I'm running the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler but the fan is only in a pull configuration due to the Corsair Vengeance heat spreaders. I have the NZXT Full Phantom case, with 6 case fans running (rear and two top fans as exhaust, front and two side fans as intake). Should I be worried about these temps?

I've been reading online that Prime95 doesn't even push the CPU to max temperatures. Should I use Intel Burn Test? I heard that one is better for getting a feel of what the max temp on your CPU is at full load. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated as I'm pretty new to monitoring CPU load, temps, etc. If you need any other information, let me know. Thanks in advance, looking to gain lots of knowledge from these boards!

39°C-40°C at idle is not bad. As for the 70°C... It wouldn't be bad if you said you overclocked it, but at stock speeds it is too mush, surely if you have a good cooler like a 212+.
But if there is no need to OC, I would say it's oké. Your cores will never run 100% in normal usage, so you should be save. If you think OC, you'dd better get a new cooler later on.
And no, I shouldn't burn test it. In normal-all-day-scenarios, youwon't even get 80%, exept if you're doing some really heavy stuff

Is it normal for cores #1 and #3 to be 7*C-10*C than the other two cores? I think that's what is creating the warmer than average CPU package temperature. Using AIDA64 to monitor my temps if that makes any difference, more feedback would be great! Thanks in advance.

I don't think i have seen a single ivy bridge cpu where there hasn't been a big temperature difference between cores.

72c on stock settings with an aftermarket cooler seems a little high though...

Have you tryed reapplying thermale paste??? Taken some arctic silver and spread it evenly them try P95 for aan couple of houres. This can be the problemen for your unequal tempé. But that still doesn't explain the high tempé. I think it's aan bad chip.
I wouldn't call it a bad chip yet. At least reseat the cooler and reapply thermal paste first. Also, you only have one fan in pull mode, so that's not optimal.

also 88F is a pretty high ambient. I think mine is usually 75F or so during the summer. I'd also look at reapplying the TIM and making sure the cooler is properly seated.

Yeah, it can get pretty warm in this house. This weekend I'll go ahead and re-seat the CPU cooler and hopefully that should lower the temps a little. The install of the CPU cooler was a bit shakey anyways, so maybe I can clean it up some. Never installed a HSF this big.

But running my computer with the temps now shouldn't be a problem right? Don't really have the time to re-seat the CPU cooler until this weekend.

Thank you everyone for your input and please, feel free to give further suggestions!

Edit:

Just thought I'd give another reading while I'm at it.

Just finished playing Diablo 3, not sure if that matters. Ambient temperature is 86*F and the CPU Package temp is from 45*C-49*C. Cores 2 and 4 are consistently under 40*C while cores 1 and 3 seem to remain right at 45*C or a little over (46-47). Still seems warm to me, CPU is seeing very little load right now.

You're completely fine temperature wise. It should be running a little cooler I think, but you are well within the acceptable range of temps.

Update:

So I ended up having tons of free time today, so I went ahead and re-seated the CPU cooler and CPU package temp is around 43*C-46*C with cores 1 and 3 remaining a little over 40*C (40-44) and cores 2 and 4 remaining under 40*C (33-37). Ambient temperature is 80*F right now, I decided to turn on the AC haha.
