[TechSpot] The Best Gaming Graphics Cards: 1920x1200 & 2560x1600 - Page 2

post #11 of 187
Wasn't the 7970 GHz edition supposed to be made from better chips than the regular 7970s? I remember reading about something like that...

Also, they should have included minimum fps too. Fluctuation = bad, I'd rather take a card that keeps stable 50-60 than one that gives 40-70.

Great review. The 7870 looks like a really nice card to me... and the GTX 670 too.

Isn't 1920x1080 the more popular resolution nowadays? Not that it makes much difference but it always confuses me as to why they use 1920x1200 in these sort of tests. Also the 7870 looks really impressive at its price point.

Same reason they chose 1600P over 1440P. Because 16:10 is more taxing on a GPU than 16:9.

That would break the $ per frame pretty badly. Unlikely it would win a thing since the regular 680 is apparently very sufficient. (The 7970GE might also have suffered a similar fate).

I'm actually very impressed by this review, very well done. I'd love to see one with OC'd results though ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

[PS: my 6970 feels so dated now .... ;( ]

1920 x 1200 = 680
2560x1600= 680

680= Winner in performance
670= winner as best price per frame rate.
post #18 of 187
I don't get it really. They say that 60 FPS is what you want to achieve, yet the card that they picked as the best value (HD 7950) only just averages that. Minimums will be way lower, vsync wont be possible in all games (those without triple-buffering will drop to 30 FPS), etc. The GTX 670 will provide a much smoother experience in BF3 (averaging above 60 FPS instead of below it) for example. I don't know about you, but I notice if my framerate drops into the 40's and the HD 7950 certainly will drop lower in BF3 than the GTX 670.

AMD have already said the ghz edition is from the same exact silicon as any other 7970. The only difference is the ghz edition has the auto boost feature and is guaranteed to run at 1ghz. That is it nothing more. And since every 7970 out there can do 1ghz on the stock voltage, I don't see how the GHZ edition ones are any better. I highly doubt we will see the ghz ediition 7970's overclocking any better as they are only tested at 1ghz and then they can be labed GHZ edition.
