Need help in applying PC tech water cooling to a different application.

Hi smile.gif.

I have an idea in my head to apply PC water cooling technology to an application at my work. What material/metal would be good to conduct heat away from a wound copper magnetic coil and be not magnetic? The coils are used to fire large magnetic pulses so anything magnetic is out of the question and it would just be forced away from the coil surface. Also a suggestion for a good heatsink compound/cement to bond the waterblock to the coil surface would be nice thumb.gif.

Anything with copper should work as it is non magnetic....To bond it to the surface I would say Arctic Silver Céramique 2 some of the other thermal compounds contain traces of metals and you want something guaranteed not to be magnetic.

Air cooling not working or not an option?

You want to cool a railgun?
What kind of temps are you expecting to deal with here?
will water be sufficient or would LN2 be a better solution?
any restraints budgetwise,Noise/portability etc?
we need some more info on the brief please smile.gif
*Edit, any ideas of using copper/other metals is a bit suss in my eyes, the copper coil conducts the planned charge, whatever medium is between the 'block' and coil needs to be electrically non-conductive, not just nonmagnetic I think, in order to prevent any leakage or unwanted electrical effects like extra resistance so maybe coat the coil in a ceramic jacket and then apply any block/tubing on top of that,

It's a magnetic coil used to induce nerve stimulation in patients. We already use air cooling and investigated watercooling. It was like a large matt coil with clear tube wound between the coil windings which the water flowed through. LN2 isn't really an option due to being used near patients tongue.gif. The air cooling we do at the moment uses either a vacuum cleaner or an 80mm fan incorperated into the coil head case.

It's just an idea swimming round my heat and it's a bit frustrating that the company hasn't moved this way in it's coil cooling. If I can come up with a solution and it's efficient enough to allow our coils to fire rapid train pulses for longer than we currently do it would be great.
