Video issues, Is my power supply or graphics card going?

Hello, I'm having an issue with my video settings and I need some advice. The computer has been working great, randomly I turned on my computer and the system no longer detected the video drivers. I only have a choice between two resolutions, 800x600 and 1024x768. Also, when windows 7 is loading, I get the green loading bar at the bottom of the screen (like vista) rather than the windows 7 emblem that swoops in.

I have tried the following steps.

Running a registry cleaner
Reinstalled the video drivers
Reformating the computer
Reformat the computer using a spare WD raptor hard drive

I have a feeling my graphics card is on it's way or the psu is failing and it cannot produce enough power. Most of my components have been replaced over the years but the power supply is at least 5 years old. But honestly any advice would be great before I buy new parts.

I have an older e8400 dual core system, gigabyte motherboard, 8gb memory, corsair 450w psu, evga gtx460 1gb superclocked, vertex4 ssd, asus vs248h-p monitor.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Good morning,
The green loading bar is due to the resolution which must be at least 1024x768 to show the orbs. In regards to a failing card, when the machine is running normally does anything happen to cause it to revert to the lower resolution, BSOD, anything? You could try and stress the card when it's running normally to see if it falters..

Thanks for the reply, I cannot get the card working normally, ever since the resolution changed nothing i've tried has corrected it. The card has been working until yesterday, it was great for desktop use, no BSOD, flickers, etc. but I noticed when gaming it was lagging more than usual and the computer crashed playing BF3 last week. Also, now when I load bios or run the windows installer, I notice the resolution is off. The letters look fuzzy and sometimes hard to read.

From what I've read it could be the card or my psu being old and may not produce enough power to support the card. I have been planning on buying a 750w PSU because the 450w is very small. If that doesn't work I'll assume it's the card.

If you have anymore advice I'm happy to listen!

Due to this affects both BIOS and OS then you can safely assume it's H/W related.. If you have room on your board try a different PCI-E slot first.
Then if that doesn't work or you can't with your board, then next check the PSU. I can't tell you how many time I've replaced components just to find the PSU was the culprit all along. If you're feeling handy, pop the top off of your PSU and see if you see any puffed capacitors, normally when I've replaced clients' PSUs a lot of the time there were a puffed/expanded CAP or two.
As far as purchasing parts, I would then recommend replacing the PSU first as in my personal/professional experience that is more likely to go then the GPU. Also if you have to replace the card anyway, you most likely will need an updated/upgraded PSU to power a newer card. If you switch out the PSU and everything works well then you saved yourself the cost of a new GPU, but it doesn't you still on the same path you're currently on...

Storm,

Thanks for the advice and I agree with you. I will pickup a new PSU tonight and hopefully correct the issue. If not, I'll have a setup with enough power to support a modern graphics card.

Cheers,

So an update on my progress. Last night I purchased a OCZ ZS 750w for $55 and replaced the Corsair 450w. Well I am happy to have the power, sadly it did not correct the problem.

So now it is time for a new graphics card. I found the GTX480 on Newegg for $209. Does anyone have a recommendation on a mid-high end card?

Well at least you're ready to rock and roll. What kind of budget did you have for a new card?

Maybe try your card in another machine. See if you have anybody who will let you use their rig for a short period of time to check if it really is the problem. Maybe take out the card, clean the golden connectors (i have heard an eraser works, get a good pink rubber one, not the hard ones that come on the cheap pencils), and try to reseat it. You might also reseat your ram. If all this fails, then it might be the GPU. Try running on integrated graphics to see if that fixes the problem.

Look at this if you want to purchase a new card. If you are looking at around $200 - $220, go with the 560 ti over the 480. The newer card uses less energy and performs better. If you can spring for $230 (or $210 after rebate), the Radeon 7850 performs better than the 560 ti, 560 ti 448 core, and the gtx 570 (a $300 card atm). It is well worth it to pay just a tiny bit more, because the performance is very good. However, if your budget doesn't allow, I understand. Budgets can be worked around, but sometimes they don't budge nearly enough. rolleyes.gif

I would get this card if my budget was $175...
XFX HD-687A-ZHFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB
and this one if my budget was $230
XFX Core Edition FX-785A-ZNFC Radeon HD 7850 1GB
$230 - if you want to pay $10 more for a slightly better out of the box 7850
MSI R7850 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC Radeon HD 7850 2GB

I'm looking to spend $200-$220 on a new card. I have found the GTX480 for $209.99, HD7850 for $214.99 (After MIR), GTX560ti 448 for $219.99 (After MIR).

Very tough, I know the gtx480 is 384-bit and 1536mb but from what I've read the newer cards can keep up with it regardless. They also are less power hungry and run cooler. I like cooler because my computer room is small. I mostly play BF3, D3, NFS if that helps..

I have already taken out the components when I installed the new PSU last night. It didn't seem to have an effect.
