Actually, the play style is almost exactly like an MMO now. Check the monster's strength relative to yours (with the Libra skill). Fight him if you want, or avoid the fight by walking around him. If you run away in the middle of a fight, you're still going to get attacked from the rear unless you can outrun them. Queue up combat actions (gambits). Etc. All that's missing is some sort of on-screen "toolbar" for us to drag our most-used actions onto to save time navigating the menus.
Yep, but who needs a toolbar when you have gambits. I really like FF12 better though. I never did like the whole random battle thing and would often do my hardest to equip things to myself to avoid it. I see something I really want to do. I start running towards it and suddenly a random battle starts. Small loading time.. we win.. game returns.. I completely forget what I was doing. Backtrack, repeat random monster fights that appear out of thin air.. meh.

Yes the random battles grated on my nerves more than anything. See somewhere you need to go. Take two steps..random battle, load ,win, load, two more steps, random battle, and so on and so forth (you get the point).

Elimation of random battles is definitely a step in the right direction for the series.
