Suitable 4GB DDR3 to go with existing 4GB?

My Dad's PC currently has this Crucial 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz/PC3-10600 Ballistix Memory Kit CL6 1.8V http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166996

I want to get him another 4GB (2x2GB) to take him to 8GB, but most currently available sticks seem to be CL9, 1.5V so I'm not sure what I can get that will be compatible.

I doubt he's running the current sticks at CL6 unless his Asus M4A785TD-V EVO Motherboard http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3/M4A785TDV_EVO/ has auto-set them to that, as he certainly wouldn't have gone in the BIOS and set them manually, so if I can run all four sticks at CL9 that would be fine. I'd still have the issue of the voltage though, if the existing sticks require 1.8v and the new ones 1.5v.

There's some, like http://www.ebuyer.com/239260-kingston-4gb-ddr3-1600mhz-hyperx-blu-memory-khx1600c9ad3b1k2-4g that run at 1.65v though, so maybe I could run them all at that, assuming the voltage can be set manually or maybe the Crucial Ballistix will run fine at 1.5v CL9 and only needs 1.8v to run at CL6, or maybe I can run all four sticks at 1066/CL9 @1.5v?

You can mix sticks providing the voltages are the same but I would not mix the different voltages together. It doesn't go so well, trust me on this one.. doh.gif

They no longer make the kit your Dad currently has due to it being one of the first DDR3 kits out. I would recommend either finding a used kit to add to his with the same voltages or replace what he currently has with a new/used 8GB kit. I personally would just get him a new kit myself...
BTW I did find what you Dad has for sale on Amazon but it's over $120 USD for a used kit...

Samsung 30 nm WonderRAM FTW. thumb.gif 8 GB = $50. Pop it in and throw the old stuff in a drawer. It will be antique soon and you can sell it on E-BAY for a huge profit.

Hey, maybe he can make some money selling the old stuff then wink.gif

I'm thinking of getting 8GB of something like http://www.ebuyer.com/311409-crucial-4gb-ddr3-1600mhz-ballistix-tactical-memory-blt4g3d1608dt1tx0ceu or http://www.ebuyer.com/235776-corsair-4gb-ddr3-1333mhz-memory-cmv4gx3m1a1333c9

Neither company's website lists those as specifically compatible but I can't see why they wouldn't be and both websites list other 8GB kits with the same 9-9-9-24-2T, 1.5v specs as compatible..

I'm inclined towards the Corsair as it's £4 cheaper per stick, saving me £8 (around 20%) for two. I realise it's only 1333Mhz vs the Crucial 1600Mhz, but I don't believe that will make much difference, even if (one day) we upgrade the processor from the Athlon II X3 425 to a Phenom II X4 955 or better and certainly not 20% difference.

You are exactly right.. Now with the thought of the 1600 vs the 1333, unless you overclock the board in BIOS the 1600 will only run at 1333 due to the board will not run 1600 without manipulation outside of the auto settings. I also checked your compatibility lists and it has similar spec'd modules listed so either of the kits would be okay. I probably would go for the Corsair due to it being slightly less. Realistically you'll never seen the difference between 1333 and 1600..

Given the current sticks are rare (I recommend matching to sticks of the same frequency, voltage and timings) I'd say a new 2x4GB kit is the ideal way to go.

AM3 boards can run 1600Mhz with a simple modification of the memory multiplier to x8 and CPU-NB voltage adjustments as necessary.

@LTStorm07 Thanks. I think I'll probably go for the Corsair then. I've got to order tonight as I've got a free next day shipping token that expires tomorrow. I don't need next day shipping, but if I don't use the token even economy shipping (5-7 days) will cost me a few quid.

@xd_1771, yeah it seems like the best idea. I'm actually running my 8GB Corsair Vengeance at 1600Mhz with my Phenom II X4 955 (overclocked to 3.8Ghz) which was easy enough with my MSI 990FXA-GD80 board (the BIOS lets me set it to 1600Mhz directly). I've also got the NB running at 2400Mhz and the CPU-NB and NB at 1.3v smile.gif

I don't know how they justify charging an extra £5 for a kit of 2x4GB compared to ordering two 4GB sticks though! I mean, the sticks are identical spec so it's not like they're not going to work together unless they come in the same packet and surely the kit packaging saves them a bit of money compared to individual packaged sticks.

Actually, despite what I said about keeping the cost down, I'm leaning toward this Crucial 1600Mhz 8GB Kit now http://www.ebuyer.com/342352-crucial-8gb-ddr3-1600mhz-ballistix-sport-memory-bls2cp4g3d1609ds1s00ceu

Yeah it's £4 more than two Crucial 4GB sticks, but I prefer to have a heatspreader on RAM, partly because it makes them easier to handle without sticking your fingers directly on the chips. There's also the possibility of running them at tighter timings of 7-7-7-20 at 1333Mhz, which might give a little boost although probably not noticeable.

Yeah That kit should do just fine make sure you take out the old Sticks and sell them or keep them in a draw or something biggrin.gif

It's actually not recommended to mix RAM kits EVEN if they're the same brand and model. However, I did it back with my old dell and haven't had problems with it. So either get a new 4x4GB, 2x8GB, or 2x4GB kit of the exact same memory.
