mobile graphics card cooling question

I really appreciated pcperspective's http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=293&type=expert article on Sept. 13 comparing nvidia go 7900 gtx vs nvidia go 7900 gs. In particular I found temperature comparison very helpful. I am agonizing over decision between these two cards(now that the 7950 is out i am also thinking about that one)in a dell xps m1710. After reading the article, I have decided from a money and performance perspective on the GTX. But I also concluded that the deciding criteria for me really hast to be operating temperatures.

I will be using this computer in an un-airconditioned room during the summer times. Sometimes the heat goes up to 95F. I saw that the article found the heat in the GTX went up to 146F when running an infinite loop of SM3.0 test in 3DMark '06. Now, I'm guessing Jon was testing in a room with ambient temp around 70. Since I will be in a room with ambient temp reaching up to 25 degrees hotter, does this mean the card will reach temps of 171F? I read somewhere that 160F was a reasonable "maximum operating temperature" for chips(does that sound right?). Does this mean using the GTX under my summer time conditions would be unsafe?

Are games going to make my graphics card run that much hotter? Do you have any idea what an average operating temperature is under normal business use? What about if I just didn't play games during the really hot spells? Would the chip still be unsafely hot if I refrained from playing games?

Another consideration I have is that I typically run in a two monitor setup with the graphics card driving the laptop monitor and the external monitor at once. Do you have any idea if the extra demand on the card would increase temperatures very much? Might the extra ram of the GTX actually result in a decrease in temperature relative to the GS when driving two monitors under normal business use?

Also, I am in a similar dilemma deciding on the chip. Do you think I might have issues with a 2.33ghz core 2 duo that I might not have with a 2.0ghz core 2 duo.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Ive got a 7900GTX 512mb is does run a litthle hot but it has never been an issue, its never come close to overheating and if your going to play games youll want the GTX.

Ah, good to hear from someone who has the card. Thank you for your reply. Are you happy with the card?

I am curious about if you noticed an issue during this past summer. Did you happen to use it during the summer? Did you happen to use it when it was very hot? Did you notice any instability when it was very hot outside?

Also, does it always run hot, or just when gaming?

Thanks,
Alex

(im using a laptop)
Im actually using a 7900GTX with a 2.23 dual core Centrino as my primary rig, and lemme tell ya its amazing. I play BF2142 at almost full settings on my 17inch wide screen. this may be because i have 2 gigs of ram but its amazing.

To sum it up, sometimes the fans are a little loud, but usually not for long. I've never had problems with heat, and the laptop performs very well. Another thing i'd consider is the fact that computers with big video card usually eat electricity pretty quick. ive got a 2 hour battery life but i am very happy with my choice

The newer gen go cards have powermizer 6.0, thermal-throttling and power management on crack

http://www.nvidia.com/page/go_7800gtx_features.html (link says 7800gtx, but same features on 7900gtx)

You won't have any serious temperature issues, the card is designed to take care of itself

Yea the fans can get alittle loud mainly becuase that little fan tthey used, it gets warm, but I woudnt say hot, after hours of hardcore DOOM3, Black and White 2, WarHammer Dawn of War, and the Medieval 2 Total War Demo and other games, its never had problems.
