[computerworld] Some Lion-powered Macs can't upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion - Page 4

Surely this is the first time that a new operating system is released that won't run on old computers. Atrocities I say!

Also, retina MBPs have the best heat dissipation since non-unibodies. I'm so confused by everyone's opinions, but hey, people are entitled to be wrong.

I think you mean, this is the first time a new operating system is released that won't run on several-year-old but still halfway decent computers. thumb.gif

It's a phenomenon exclusive to Apple, really. I have a prebuilt Pentium 4 Dell from 2002 that can run Windows 7 with full Aero support, and surprisingly well at that.

It's longer than that. The newest system that can't run Mountain Lion because of the lack of 64-bit graphics drivers is four years old, and the oldest is six.

Buy an adapter and give Apple even more money for the privilege of using ports that they omitted purely for aesthetic reasons (and to sell adapters)? How about no.

............easier repair and/or replacement is the whole reason those connectors exist. It's not "other than," that's the whole point. And how is an Ethernet port not useful? You're an intelligent guy (not meant sarcastically), surely you don't really and truly believe Apple's bull about this?

One pound is a 20% reduction in weight, which is pretty noticeable if youre carrying a lot of other things.
Sure the ethernet port is probably thr biggest loss, but again i cant remember the last time i used it either. Its not like youre forced to go with apples options for accesories either. There are plenty of cheaper third party makers

This is disgusting - we install win 7 on 2002 dell vostro's and all works fine and dandy, God damm it apple you ripped these people off a silly amount of money for cheap hardware to begin with, now apple decide its obselete . this is Apple Money grabbing and trying to force users to upgrade to $2000 laptops with hardware worth $700.

There doing it with iphone5 by putting the new connector on thus instantly making all accessories obsolete ( yeah i know there will be adaptors blah blah which still cost money) - how can people not see through these cretins.

How can people not see that you're not forced to get an iPhone 5 or buy any adapters. If you want the iPhone 5 badly enough to basically make all your accessories unusable without an adapter buy it. If not keep your iPhone 4/4S.

Also I don't really see what laptops have to do with the iPhone. Oh and IIRC Samsung changed their docks 5 times in 5 years. Apple have changed theirs once (so far) in 5 years, and if you do have the older iPhones you can still use newer accessories without having to buy an adapter.

To put it into perspective, the first gen Macbook Pro has X1600 graphics ( produced in 2006, plus a 3GB RAM limitation), the second one an 8600 GT. Pretty old, guys.

You can barely use the latter for a dedicated PhysX card. Looking at many of the video cards in peoples' sigs, you wouldnt be caught dead with one.

It may be planned obsolescence, but keeping with efficiency i'd rather not have drivers/software for 6 year old hardware on my brand new machine.

If I buy an accessory I expect it to last more than 5 years, particularly if its I dunno a car..

ML will only have a 64bit Kernel, this is the cut off a cut off that MS will eventually have to make. Some of the computers we're talking about here started life on Tiger (10.4). The bigger annoyance is that some of the touted features (air play mirroring) will not be available on any Mac that doesn't have quick sync so H67 and up. The only real reason to do this is not to have to code a software version of the system. There is not a supported Mac Pro (08 and up) that cannot transcode a video faster than real time. A Majority of iMac's will also do the trick. Lets also consider that those videos could have already been transcoded.

If I keep the MB and MBP they'll get ML because is $20 and it's what Lion should be.

The original MacBook Air came with 2GB of RAM and used a Core 2 Duo CPU, so it could run Lion. But it's not on the upgrade list. The same goes for 15- and 17-in. MacBook Pros launched in October 2006, which were also equipped with a Core 2 Duo.

Just Apply being Apple.

it is kind of dumb but there is nothing stopping people from putting windows or linux on their computers. sucks if you buy a mac solely for the os though
