But why would office workers need a tablet with a keyboard (i.e. a weak laptop with a much smaller screen) when they can have a laptop?

So you have a weaker product which has the only benefit over a laptop of being slimmer and lighter so that it can be used as an e-reader (but this targets only a small percentage of laptop users). So laptops can't be replaced.

I don't think they will as long as they use a mobile OS. But ultra books are becoming widely available.

In my experience though, my Prime does things I do with my laptop, including programming in C++ and distance education. I can create documents and presentations just as easily, as well as surf the web. It can even play 1080p MKV content without choking or killing the battery. On Windows-specific and hardware-intensive tasks, I use my desktop instead.

Personally I don't see tablets replacing the entire laptop segment in computing. However, I do see tablets eliminating the low end segment of laptops.

The low end laptops that people buy are generally used for content consumption / web browsing, and the tablets out there fill that purpose nicely.

Over the next few years we will see ultrabook style laptops take up more of the high end, and it'll be interesting to see how well the Microsoft Surface Pro tablet does. If the surface tablet does well, that could also eat into the upper end laptop market.

I told her that no matter what you think, you will never match the productivity of a KB/M and Windows. She responded with "but these kids are able to create slideshows and...." I was just like doh.gif As much as I love Android, and as much as I love iOS - you will never reach the pinnacle of productivity and creation that Windows sits atop.

Tablets are mainly content viewing devices these days whereas laptops and desktops remain content creating devices and general powerhouses. Tablets and mobile devices will take a certain market share from laptops no doubt.

I remember when I had to ring up or walk into the bank to check my account, then I could check on my computer... now I can check on my phone/tablet in less than half the time... what's next?

Wait guys, the bigger movement is to making the transformer stations.

What asus is doing with the Padfone is one way to think of it. Most clients do not infact need the processing power granted by a desktop.

But if you could combine a LoVo cpu like one of those lower power i7s (x86) with something like a quad core Exynos 5xxx (ARM), in a tablet interface that has pinouts for usb and hdmi as well as a laptop dock, or a phone attachement which can detach the ARM cores. You could essentially have a very interesting shared computing experience, which we may reach with Haswell.

When you need to work, either dock your tablet into a monitort and keyboard mouse or use the laptop attachment, when you need to do hardcore work, use the Haswell cores ontop of Windows x86. When you're doing light browsing and such, hop over to Windows RT, and when your watching movies or something, you can switch to Android.

All work can be cached or shared with a central HDD contained the tablet. That would be fast and efficient. Thats where this is heading anyways.

Sharing of x86 and ARM is the best way to go. ARM cores are RISC based, still too weak compared to x86. Haswell will bring vast IPC improvements and corrections in the underlying Uarch for laptops, if you can distrubte the computing between the two in a dockable tablet form factor, that will be the next step.

It seems only ASUS is perusing that in this venue. But it is the future.

Encryption.... My company laptop has three different types of encryption and two different anti-virus apps on it. On top of that, it aligns through a VPN to our corporate platform and remote drives.

Until tablets can do that plus run powerpoint and have sufficient horsepower for massive spreadsheets (for example I was running pivot tables off a 23,000 line spreadsheet this morning), tablets will not be able to compete in the business space.

For home use, for casual web browsing, email etc, I use my tablet in place of both my desktop and laptops. However I use a desktop when I have to run photoship, encode video etc.

I think they will replace laptops for some people depending on what they do with them. I was debating on getting a laptop, but got a galaxy 10.1 instead and now have no desire to buy a laptop. Im a mechanic and use it daily at work. I use the torque app with an obd2 bluetooth adaptor to check codes and data on cars, then access our shop manuals and wiring diagrams with the tablet and sometimes diagnose the problem without leaving the drivers seat. Our shop even has all the domestic oem scantools on a laptop and I find myself using the tablet more often then the oem tools. The torque app updates most data streams at a much faster rate then some of the $5000 + scan tools which makes diagnosing running problems so much easier
