120 or 60 hz help decide please.

Thread Starter
i just bought this setup:

ASUS HD7850-DC
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz

and i can buy this 120hz screen "Samsung 23 LED 23SA700" on sale 280$ around the same price as decent 60hz panel.

i know i wont be getting anywhere near 120fps in current titles but would it be worse playing like 50fps in battlefield 3 on the 120hz screen compared to the 60 hz screen?

Even though your h/w won't be doing 120Hz justice, i cannot recommend a 60Hz screen to anyone that's upgrading their display. If and when you decide to upgrade to crossfire etc then you'll have a monitor ready for it. Better than buying a 60Hz and upgrading and wishing you bought 120Hz afterall.

Get a 120Hz monitor and upgrade gpu (maybe Xfire) later to give 120+fps or close.thumb.gif
post #4 of 9
Wow! I just ordered that screen! I'm sure that if you drop you settings to medium/high you will be able to get at least 90FPS with your 7850.

This is one of the best 120Hz monitors out there and 120Hz leaves you room to upgrade to XFire in the future, to take full advantage of the screens capabilities.

It can also convert any 2D content to 3D content, which is cool! I will be using this feature for movies.

If you wish to hold fire, I will be receiving my screen tomorrow, then I can tell you what it is really like.

In his sig rig it says " PowerColor Radeon 7870 PCS+ 1250/1300MHz "
The screen is awesome, BTW. I would certainly recommend it to anybody who wants a reasonably priced 120Hz panel.

The colours are vibrant, the text is sharp and the screen is so bright I have to turn it down to 22% so that I can bare it. The 2D to 3D conversion is good, as well. It works particularly brilliantly with the Windows 7 Sample pictures...

As for the 7850, modereatly OC'ed card should have no problems on medium settings, though a highly OC'ed INTEL CPU is a necessity to push 120+ frame rates. My 2500k has no problems with this at 4.8 to 5GHz

Gaming is much better on a 120hz monitor. I've been focused so long on updating and building new towers that I've been using the same monitor for years. Once I bought a 120hz monitor it changed everything. Games move so fluid. I can't go back to 60hz.
