[Huffington] The Hobbit 48 FPS Footage Divides Audience

Quote:
Director Peter Jackson debuted ten minutes of footage from his upcoming "Lord Of The Rings" prequel, "The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey," at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday, and the number of negative reactions was startling.

Source

Slightly older article but, apparently it has the same effect as watching cable TV on a 120hz. It looks like you are on the set watching them film it.

IMO this is NOT a good thing and I personally am not shocked at the reactions of those who saw the footage, I would probably feel the same because I know how I feel about 120hz television.

I want my movies to feel like MOVIES, not like I am on the set watching them film it.

If Peter Jackson wouldn't have mentioned this was getting filmed in 48 FPS, maybe 20% would have noticed and complained about it.

Having a 120hz tv, i see the effect right away when watching tv or a movie. It just destroys the feeling of the movie, i dunno how to explain it. It does not feel right., it's like fast forward without being fast forward lol. but I'm still eager to see the movie and will nonetheless. To have a similar effect, just watch LOTR with a 120hz or 240hz!

I don't find 120hz to be a real issue. 240hz however drives me crazy. My dad has a Sony 240hz and it makes movies feel like wierdly filmed daytime soap operas....

Movies should not move away from 24fps. 24p gives a surreal effect that is obviously not reality, which is critical to the immersion of the audience.

High frame rates are great for documentaries and such, but completely destroy the experience of narrative. High frame rates cause our brains to reject what we are viewing because the video becomes too close to real life smoothness. Our brains are not fooled though, because they know that we are viewing a two dimensional image posing as a real life window to the film that we are watching. It's a different version of the uncanny valley, and it puts our minds in a state of unrest, which makes for an uncomfortable viewing experience.

If a movie is projected at 24fps however, our brains stop trying to negotiate whether what we are viewing is real or not, because neither the smoothness of motion nor the three dimensionality of what we are viewing are realistic. Since no aspect is realistic, our minds stop trying to fool us, and we can comfortably engage in what we are viewing.

In short, high frame rates are bad, and I hope they don't become the norm.

I absolutely LOVE 120hz. To quote every person who comes over to my house I love how it looks 'too real'. So of course I have no issue with boundaries being pushed in film FPS, rather hollywood go in this direction and just let 3D die out.

Huh.. It looks too good so people are upset with it? Some of these people must have also liked 480p over 1080p or perhaps they like 480i better than all available formats. How can a camera make real life look more real than what is real I think that some of those critics were confused and went in to hate something they don't understand. I plan to get a 120Hz monitor in like a year, but I'm still rocking ~8 year old 19" monitors and some of my friend's displays and even the one on my laptop just blow me away at how much LCD tech has improved.

Watching Blu-ray's (one of those emulated 240Hz tv's) was one of the best things I've seen for home entertainment, I can actually tell what's happening in the movie now and motion doesn't hurt my eyes watching tons of grainy blur flash across the screen, move forward.
