HTPC/SFF build: Looking for advice

Hey all, I will be building a mini-ITX system very soon and, having never built one, had a few questions. It will be mainly an HTPC for watching HD video (local and streaming), but will also see some general PC use, like light gaming, torrenting, and light photo editing. The emphasis here is on cost smile.gif.

1. Should I go AMD or Intel? It's down to either an AMD A4-3400 (dual-core Llano) or an Intel Celeron G540 (dual-core Sandy Bridge). The Celeron averages 30% faster on the CPU side of things but the A4 can be overclocked by 20-30%.

2. Really small power supply? I'd like this build to be as compact as possible, so naturally i'm leaning towards a Mini-ITX PSU (or something with similar dimensions). Any reason I shouldn't? Any other websites that have a good selection besides NewEgg? Can I trust the cheap Mini-ITX cases that come with a PSU installed?

3. Remotes for a PC? The rest of my family, who aren't very tech savvy, will be using this for watching video (mainly Netflix, but some local stuff too). They can handle a remote but probably won't like a wireless mouse/keyboard/touchpad etc. Any recommendations? Are they limited to just Windows Media Center?

Thanks for reading!

1. With gaming and photo editing : Llano APU but given cost constraints i would suggest the A6-3500? Very relevant investigation did by Toms recently

2. Keeping hardware low power/efficient yes peeps run ITX rigs with the bundlled PSU

3. If stuff need to be keyed in a mini kb/touchpad isn't a bad idea? The Rii/ipazzport come to mind tongue.gif Either way, something u can wake the machine via USB from sleep?

Thanks for answers. I managed to pick up an unopened A8-3870K for $85, and i'll try my luck with a 220w Athena Power ITX PSU (I can't find any ITX cases small enough).

That ipazzport looks like the ticket. A little "advanced" for the rest of the family but they'll get used to it. Thanks for the feedback, +rep.
