Best Motherboard for 3930?

Thread Starter
Hello all,
I am going to be buying a new mb and cpu because amd is dead to me. My 990fx + 8120 will not run my 2 new 670's sli'ed in surround.....so I am going for the overkill of a 3930k. With cost of the mb not really a concern, and I do very much enjoy pushing my cpu to the limit, what motherboard would you recommended? I have been looking at the ASUS Rampage IV Extreme or the ASUS P9X79 WS. Does anyone have any opinions on either of these 2 boards? Or maybe one that I have overlooked. Thanks

The only real advantage to the WS is dual 1GE. Other than that (and the claimed server level compatibility with raid cards which I have not tests) the R4E is a superset of the WS. I've built a lot of systems with the R4E and it's incredibly solid especially with the latest BIOS. Highly recommend it.

Sorry to "hijack" the thread, but other than the 8x dimm slots, is there a real advantage going Asus X79 rampage over formula 4?

Two more USB 3 ports, bluetooth and the ROG Key ..... smile.gif Well and it takes non-buffered, non-ecc memory, and may not have as good an audio profile. I haven't built a Formula IV yet, so I can't comment on the PCI-E configuration without actually fooling with it. Asus tends to say "oh it and it has 4 x16 slots!!" when the truth about speed and support is always much more complicated...

Thanks for your reply...
Well, I am still struggling to decide between a high-end 1155 and a 2011 i7 system for 3D modelling and the occasional game...I doubt I will need more than 32GBs of ram, so the 4x slots are not a real issue as I won't reach for pricey 16GB sticks.

I really don't care for the ROG key: if Digi+ II is the same for the 2 boards, and both can hold a 5GHz o/c on a good chip, I am fine.
The lil fancier audio on the formula is ofc a perk.

I really want to try GPU accelerated renderers on that, but I doubt I would use more than 2 way SLI even if I do have more than 2 cards (unbiased renderers do not need SLI to utilize CUDA cores, and most 3D creation programs do not see SLI anyways, you will be using one card all the time, with the rest idling).

More USB 3 ports? I (again) doubt I will ever use more than 2-3 USB 3 devices simultaneously so...

Going Formula or Rampage over the lower priced saberthooth or P9X79 asus boards is purely Digi+ II driven in my case, so I would like to know if I am missing something big...

Why do you want board with Digi+ II over Digi+? Is it because of "II" in "Digi+ II"? Well if you dig more VRMs, you might want to consider P9X79 DELUXE. It featured 16+4 phase VRMs for CPU.

more VRMs = less operating temperature = longer life-span

For 3D modelling/rendering, I recommend 2011 over 1155 (to be precise Ivy Bridge). Even at stock frequency 2011 produced less heat output than IB. I'm focusing on heat output because when you said 3D modelling/rendering, I can imagine computer running at full speed for probably a couple of hours depend on what you're rendering, which also means a lot of heat output. 2011 also support Quad-Channel memory which your applications might be able to utilized.

Both are great boards in term of performance. For features, I recommend ASUS Rampage IV Extreme.

if you decide on 1155, Check out the Asrock fatal1ty pro, keeps my 2500k quite happily at 5ghz 24/7, Something my older Asus board on the same chip couldn't reach
