redface.gif This is why giving me a terminal could be bad...sure I'd never rm -rf / but if things are similarly named I'm screwed especially considering my love for the prior mentioned wildcard. Thankfully I'm getting used to going rm -ir though fingers get sore from hitting y all the time. rolleyes.gif

If your terminal stops functioning properly that's a problem, I've had it happen a few times and usually I just shut out the terminal and open a new one. What happens when your GUI locks up? We can go into what if scenarios all day, do you really want to go there?

[edit] I've never had tab not work, I've only had my input text go blank like a password. The commands still work properly I just can't see anything except output.

I don't know what causes it sometimes other than when I used to run some installer scripts and then tab wouldn't work until I restart the comp.

As for the GUI lock up thing...that's why even when Linux is "buggy" I'm not as worried as I am with Windows because the CLI/terminal is more familiar to me in Linux and I get around just fine (though really slow). With windows I can't actually remember ever bother trying that. But that's my whole view is that both are necessary and serve users better than just having one or the other. That said...the GUI is "easier" and more "human friendly" until you learn what's going on in terminal/CLI. Maybe changing the "language" in a terminal would help out.

GUIs can be superior to a CLI but they have to be well built... that takes time and thought. In most cases, the GUI is not necessary.

I do agree with that, you just don't really find a GUI to address all the things in an OS. I actually prefer GUI based programs, smplayer frontend for mplayer is a good example. I just don't think you can really encompass everything in bash for an OS.

Rookie, I'm guessing your scripts muck something up. I've never had bash autocomplete fail on me like that. I've had many other issues if a program crashes, though they never repeat when a new terminal is opened fresh.

I've had tab lock up a few times on me. Hasn't happened since I start Rxvt-Unicode though. Just seemed like a problem with Gnome-Terminal at the time. I'm sure other suffer from the same thing as well tongue.gif

I hate the whole GUI vs CLI argument that some nerds have. Sorry but I just think the whole premise of that kind of discussion is just retarded as it suggested that one is superior than the other or that both cannot co-exist.

GUIs are better for some things, CLI are better for others.

If you want precision or the ability to chain / script ideas together, then using the CLI can be a real advantage. If you want to browse through content (be that documents / web pages, file system hierarchy or whatever), then using a GUI can prove advantageous. There really is no need to compare the two and say one is better than the other.

Also, many ncurses apps aren't technically CLI. They're text based user interfaces that are more like a GUI than a CLI.
