Seriously... every time I read an article about AMD I think about that image and start laughing. That's probably the one meme that I wish I could permanently allow in the News sections!

we found a favorite!!

muhahahahahaha

Why not a bailout like for GM? I guess they can't just go around throwing copious amounts of cash around anymore, so $12.6 million will have to do guys.

Hope it gets used wisely.

Exascale, what's next after exascale?

Must this be used every time AMD even comes to mention? Even 4chan reserves itself to using memes in context, only.

"Moarine cores?" would've been acceptable.

This. It's not funny anymore, it's like the "But can it run Crysis" joke in that seeing it everywhere really killed it.

Good for AMD, APUs will be the future for this kind of stuff.

I read that the US no longer has the fastest supercomputer in the world, since Jaguar was pushed to third in the list by one in China, and that Japan has the fastest. The same article said that the US government set aside 126 million dollars for research. So AMD has just received 10% of that. Having the most powerful supercomputer is about more than just bragging rights, it affects all spheres of research since you can use the machines for research, simulation, etc.

Perhaps they liked the direction AMD was going with APU's. An APU with a powerful enough graphics unit would allow calculations to happen on both the CPU cores and the GPU, on a single chip. Also, even though $12mil isn't a lot of money, being awarded the grant is also about prestige, and the fact that you may uncover something useful you can use. Assuming the US government didn't decide on AMD for no good reason, perhaps they're already onto something.

Not too far back in history, AMD was making some superior chips and Intel had to play catch up, and when they did, they decided to floor it and have left AMD so far in the dust... I would love to see some i7 killers from AMD..

At any rate, good for AMD for picking up some business.

Why not IBM? Aren't they the supercomputing masters? Or am I getting my companies/manufacturers/etc all mixed up?

Because AMD isn't bankrupt.

The US just got the fastest supercomputer in the world with IBM's Sequoia. And as you can see, it's not in first by a trivial amount.
