I'm building my first PC (HTPC) but not sure wich CPU to go with. I've read the IB is faster clock/clock, but runs hotter OC'd. That and the SB is more efficient. My use will be gaming/streaming/surfing with a single 670 or 7950 on a 37-40" 1920x1080 @ 60hz LCD TV. I only plan to OC as needed, however my biggest concern is heat, power, future proof. I intend to use this PC for 7+ yrs, and only upgrading the GPU. What CPU do you guys recommend?

3570k for that. I wouldnt recommend a 2600k unless you're doing more intensive work like video rendering.

Thanks for the reply. I dont plan to do any rendering/modeling, but what about future proof, power consumption, OC heat? Is the 2600 not worth the $60?

the hyper threading the i7 has really will have no benefit for gaming.

Disagree.
Windows 7 was designed for it, and my system feels 'snappier' with it on, as opposed to 4.4Ghz HT/off.
Games run very smooth and my system multitasks like a bastard.

People can say what they want about architecture and I agree for games a solid quad is really all you need, but you get what you pay for and you won't regret a 3770k or 2600k.

Just my 02.

I still like the 2600k. Because of the HT and it isn't a big heater like IB is. I wouldn't buy one until they fixed the IHS on the cpu myself. As we all know the 2600k isn't all that hot and it overclocks well also. They just need to fix the buggy IB in my opinion first. I would get the 2600k and be covered both ways. Thanks

theres a whole 3 frames difference.


If money isnt a problem, then go ahead and get an i7, but really you arent missing out on anything if you dont.

Well for 7+ years, programs that definitely use 4+ cores will come out in the meanwhile, and 8 threads might come in handy more
