LN2 from university

has anyone on here ever successfully scored some LN2 from their college's or university's physics/chemistry/biology departments??

i know its been recommended to me before, but i dont even know how i would even begin to go about doing that.. im sure i cant just ask a professor, because even of they use it in their lab, its probably not their ln2 supply.. its probably the department's.. but who's in charge of ln2 supply and has the authority to say 'yay' or 'nay'? I also wanna be careful about getting shot down too soon, before i even make it to the person whos actually in charge. maybe i should tell them its for a summer project im doing and not for a personal hobby .. maybe theyd be more willing to help?

i dunno, i know im probably overthinking this which is why i am wondering if anyone else has ever done this before?

My fluid dynamics professor was doing a lot of research with LN2. He told me I could have it if they ever had any left over before a long weekend but they were always empty frown.gif

I know Hobie gets his from his university (or at least he used to).

The only places that I see LN2 at my university are: chemistry, physics, and pharmacy departments. While I never obtained any, approaching a TA or professor would help you score some. TA's at my school make ice cream from LN2 occasionally. You should discuss with whoever you will talk with about handling/ transporting safety. Even if you know it already, by asking about it, you seem more serious.

ok cool.. so it may help to be on a first name basis with a prof that actually uses it in his/her research.. unfortunately i dont atm because i just graduated and dont start biomed grad grad program for another 2 months

fluid dynamics? i learned that in undergrad physics class but never had an entire course dedicated to it lol.. you must have been a physics major biggrin.gif

ah yes, i think i knew that already. i considered switching to engineering in my junior year, but i would have had to start from scratch basically. plus, my degree only required 1 semester of calc + analytical geometry, which is a joke compared to engineering (of any kind). so hats off to you thumb.gif

Did you try any welding or gas suppliers? Some Welding shops will carry it and sell it.
Then there is Airgas and other Gas suppliers that sell it.
If you are not on a one on one with a Proffesor might as well talk to them about it, can't hurt to try.

I did work experience in the micro-biology lab of a uni, Dry Ice was just in a dispenser in the basement, you could take a box, go down, fill it up, and take it home.

I did come in contact with LN2 once, they were using it for cryogenic storage, it was all locked up etc and I don't think you'd have any chance getting LN2.

When I got it from my university I went to the lab coordinator of the biology department and asked for it.  The lab coordinator was in charge of all of the lab equipment and supplies for the bio department, so it was up to her to give me some or not.  If I were you, I would find out who is in charge of the labs/supplies and ask them directly, because that's probably your best shot at it.
