About to do a DICE slush box for my cpu and gpu's and got some questions

Thread Starter
Now that I got a Seasonic X-1050 psu I can properly push my rig to the limit. I've done slush boxes with ice water before and had great results but it just left me wanting more so here I am lol. Being a now poor college student I don't have the money to even buy one pot let alone three so I've decided to try a DICE slushbox. I saw a thread on here where someone did it and it seemed to work great. Since this is my first time going subzero in a kind of unorthodox way so I've got a few questions .

1. First off, will there be any problem with running superchilled alcohol through my cpu or gpu water blocks? Rubber gasket damage?

2. Will a pond pump be able to withstand the kind of subzero temps it will be operating in? How about heavy duty tygon tubing?

3. Since this isn't the most effective way to run DICE (just the cheapest in my situation) how far should I take my insulation prep work on my cards and cpu? Don't want to be doing overkill if I don't need to. CPU block is the Apogee XT and the gtx480's both have XSPC Uniblocks with the stock pcb heatsink still on.

4. How much DICE should I get for a good 2hr slush box session? I can get DICE for a $1/lb so its not that expensive and I have the choice between pellets and a solid block.

5. Whats the best liquid to use as my coolant and in the slush box itself? I was thinking alcohol for both

Thanks for any help!

i can tell you acetone is most common liquid.. but at the end of the day you just need something who melting point is below the sublimation point of solid CO2, -79c. Acetone MP is ~ -90 so its your best bet. its also easily attainable and inexpensive.

dont know about what pumps can handle the extreme conditions, sorry

cant attest to how water blocks will react with acetone (you mentioned alcohol, but youre not going to be using alcohol, unless you get something like isopropanol or pure methanol, which you wont be able to get cheap, if at all). acetone somewhat similar to water in that its a small, polar, oxyenated molecule.. as far as how much it will promote redox reaction with copper of your blocks, i dont know. if i were a betting man though, id say you should be fine.

id say your best bet is to just coat everything in LET (liquid electrical tape). If you do it right, you can leave it on even if your not doing subzero cooling. it also lasts a ling time. it might be overkill to some, but its easy to do and its better safe then sorry.

Thanks for the help. I don't care about the pond pump much since it was free but I do care about my blocks. Can anyone comment about running acetone through waterblocks for about 2 hrs?

I had a huge response loaded up but the iPad decided that after browsing around a bit, it wanted to load the page again.

Long story short:

1. Apogee XT will be okay, Rasa GPU will be okay, I wouldn't use the Raystorm (acrylic might shatter).

2. You don't care about the pump... Sounds like an experiment! I'd pick up some of the tubing from home depot that has the wrapping in it (reinforced).

3. Don't skimp on insulation. That's how stuff dies. Go the whole nine yards: LET or eraser, paper towels, closed cell foam or armaflex (neoprene), etc. Wrap the tubes with tube insulation (I usually wrap them with electrical tape after to secure it well), insulate the pump and blocks as well. You don't want anything that gets cold touching the ambient air... That's just loss of efficiency. (NOTE: Do not let acetone or cold liquid touch anything that's made of acrylic... It will shatter. If you have a tube reservoir in your loop, remove it and replace it with something else. You need room for the liquid to condense and expand).

4. I'd get 20 lbs and see how long that lasts. If you're having a good session, you'll want to go as long as possible.

5. I'm not positive about this one. However, if you use acetone, DO NOT use a styrofoam cooler. It'll eat through it instantly.

Hope that helps... You have a bit more research to do but it should put you pretty close.

Thanks for the help. Since I see you have an i7 920 and do a lot of overclocking can you recommend me a max Vcore range for this type of cooling im using?

I would stay below 1.6v. At least that's what I did when I had my 930 on DICE and even though you might not get temps as low with a slushbox, it will still be safe.

I used 1.8V on my 920 on dice and it's still in my 24/7 machine running 4.2GHz at 1.375V as it always has. Nehalem chips are tanks...

I would keep a max of around 1.7V, but remember... more voltage doesn't always help. Most 920's won't see gains past 1.65V. Mine is just an odd one.

Read http://www.overclock.net/t/593915/chiller-ready-for-testing and http://www.overclock.net/t/434007/slush-box-for-benching for info on what you are doing thumb.gif

Also, don't use alcohol. It gels up, even 99% isopropyl.

I think most people use ethylene glycol for this type of thing.

we use ethylene glycol for cell/molec. bio research.. a very versatile molecule indeed, but never heard of it used in this capacity. would be cool to see though thumb.gifbiggrin.gif
