[VB] - Apple gives in to green pressure, calls EPEAT breakup “a mistake”

Apple made a bit of a whoopsie last week when it withdrew from EPEAT’s green certification program. Now, the MacBook maker is back on board with the environmental organization and is eager to get its seal of approval for Apple products again.

In an open letter posted to Apple’s website, hardware SVP Bob Mansfield wrote, “Many loyal Apple customers… were disappointed to learn that we had removed our products from the EPEAT rating system. I recognize that this was a mistake. Starting today, all eligible Apple products are back on EPEAT.”

Maybe it was having a bigger impact than some would think.

lol they couldnt handle the amount of hipster backlash. i knew it

edit: also the mbpr meets epeat gold requirements according to the website (if you look at the pdf with info, that was updated on the 11th [yesterday]). i thought it didnt meet requirements because the screen was not recyclable or something (plus the battery wasnt replaceeable).

This is surprising. I wonder if backing out of the program had anything to do with it getting on the list. Perhaps it encouraged EPEAT to update their standards on what defines serviceability?

i wonder. i kind of doubt that apple made any changes to the design, but perhaps it is possible. though i feel like its more likely epeat caved/altered requirements. id like to hear if they did make changes (apple)

Some government work requires EPEAT certification... that is a lot of business lost.

No, government organizations do.... Ideally, they do bids and RFPs...

I'v seen Macs used in DoE research labs. Both for researcher preference, and for software compatibility. That's actually where I first got to mess with them and became interested in OS X.

I was on MacRumors and saw the news thread about this... it had a link to a list of certified Apple products on EPEAT and the rMBP was there... with the same rating as the other Mac laptops. Maybe they've re-evaluated some of their methods, or whether or not the rMBP is easy enough to disassemble? From the article it sounds like they want the EPEAT standards to improve or be updated... so maybe something happened behind the scenes we don't know about.
