Quick question on mixing a ram kit

Thread Starter
So I got 12GB of Dominators 1600mhz with 8-8-8-24 timings. However i would like to upgrade to x79 and i'd like to use the same ram kits but still fill up all slots. Would i be able to add a 4gb set (2x2gb) with 9-9-9-24 timings mixed in or should i just purchase another triple memory kit with the same timings?

You can but it isn't healthy to do so. But you can just relax the timings to the other kit to match @ 9-9-9-24 and it should be okay though. Thanks

I would recommend getting a quad channel kit. The old triple channels tend to run higher voltages than the newer kits too. You can get some very good 16GB kits (4x4GB) for a very decent price these days. Plus, not having 2 sticks in each channel will give you better overclocks in general.
