Iirc the LSI SAS chip isn't a full blown RAID card, meaning it can't do 5/6, only 0/1/10 but it is hardware for the levels it does do. If it were capable of 5/6 and higher, it would add 400 bucks at least to the board.

Good clarification, and you are correct. I'm actually putting in an Areca 1882ix to handle the parity raid array, and plan to use the LSI chip to do a Raid 0 for my scratch drives.

As much as I would like to agree with a lot of that. No matter how good the onboard raid might be for certain types, it's still onboard raid. I'd much prefer an actual raid card in case that mobo ever went south.
