Oh, I didn't realize there was a limit on GPU count in SLI. I thought it was just the number of cards. Hrm.

The 690 power numbers came from the card's spec sheet. I suppose they could be wrong, but if so it's not my fault. smile.gif My guess at the mobo+cpu+cooling power draw could easily be wrong, though.

guys it isnt a waste for me because i have only 1 gpu, i have over 10 harddrives and like this board. my question is will i lose performance only using 1 690. whether its a waste is pure opinion.
No it is not a pure opinion if it's a waste. The 690 will perform slightly less than a regular X79 board. The 690 already has a PLX chip on it. Then add in the PLX between the 690 and the CPU. Extra latency versus regular X79. Then add in that you can get a regular X79 board, and a PCI-E 3.0 RAID card for less than the Extreme 11.

This board is very niche. Really only designed for four GPU's and simultaneously having large amounts of hard drives in RAID. Or if you simply must have the most expensive, feature laden X79 MB.

If you don't eventually plan on having a bunch of GPUs I see no reason to get this board over a cheaper board and maybe a raid card. Otherwise you're paying for chips that you aren't using.

What is the fastest RAM that will work with this mobo? Would the G-Skill Trident @ 2600Mhz work? (http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=525)

It will work, will it work at the rated 2600 we shall see... says 2500+ so I imagine it might not have any problems with it. Can't say for sure until someone tests it or asrock reports on it.

A couple of questions on this...

1) I thought you could run as many cards as you like, even without an SLI bridge or motherboard SLI support. It's just that perf will suffer since everything sent between cards has to go over the the PCIe bus. No?

2) I know the 690 is dual-gpu, but isn't the SLI of the two GPUs hidden inside the card? There's a PCIe controller and an SLI bridge onboard, like having a tiny dedicated motherboard inside the card. You don't need a motherboard with SLI support to run a 690. I think it just looks like a single GPU to the outside world. Not sure, though. Feel free to correct me if you know better.

Both sli and crossfire allow a maximum of 4 gpu chips. So since the 690 has 2, you can only use 2 cards regardless of pcie slots.

Just got this bad boy in the mail a few minutes ago.

I haven't had a chance to examine it in detail yet, but I'm a little worried/annoyed by the fact that one of the heatsinks is apparently not fully attached. You can see how it is coming up on the left side:

IMG_0041.jpg 522k .jpg file
IMG_0042.jpg 559k .jpg file
IMG_0043.jpg 693k .jpg file

Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of moving so I won't be able to get my new system together for at least a week or two. Wondering if I should RMA it or just hold on and see what happens. Could just be that the screw came loose and the heatsink needs to be re-fastened but eh...

What do you guys think?
