[LegitReviews]ASRock X79 Extreme11 Motherboard Announced - Intel X79 Gets Refresh - Page 33

I got the AE11 motherboard yesterday and I'm waiting on the CPU to arrive. I should get that on Monday.

However, I've noticed a potential issue with configuring a 3-way SLI. The manual says to put the graphics cards in either PCI slots 1, 3 & 7 or in 1, 5 & 7 for a 3-way SLI configuration with all cards getting 16x bandwidth. However, the 3-way double-width SLI bridge only spans 5 slots (ie. 1, 3 & 5). The only thing I can think of is to either put the cards in slots 1, 3 & 5 or try using the single width bridges connecting 1 to 3 and 3 to 7. I've emailed ASRock about it. We'll see what the say. And since I don't have a CPU yet, I can't test the system myself to see which one is feasible to do. Anyone got a system up and running who can test it out?

You would think if Asrock wants you to configure it this way, they would have supplied the right bridge...

Couldn't you just use the 4 way bridge?

I'm drawing a complete blank on where I read it but the suggested configurations I saw for installing cards was slot 1 for single, slots 1 and 5 for dual, slots 1, 5, and 7 or slots 1, 3, and 5 for triple. I wish I could remember where I saw that. If I find it, I'll edit my post. Maybe I made it up.

The provided 3-way SLI bridge requires 1/3/5 installation and that's what's in the photograph.

The manual also says 1, 5, and 7 for triple CF and the picture clearly shows adjacent cards with no gap.

In any case, none of the bridges can make the 1 to 7 gap so it's a moot point. I'm guessing the 1/5/7 instructions in the manual are typos.

There is no 4-way bridge included. To do a 4-way SLI configuration, you'd use all the single-width bridges included connecting 1 to 3, 5 to 7 and 3 to 7.

Also, I've only got 3 graphics cards. The double-width bridge which is supposed to be used for a 3-way SLI doesn't fit what the manual says as far as placement of the graphics cards.

It wouldn't surprise me. Anyhow I would run it how the provided bridge "would" have you run it because all the slots in question will get the max bandwidth they can get anyways.

Don't pay attention to any of that wording. Just use slots 1, 3, 5. You will have to use two PLX chips regards so which slots yoh use doesn't matter.

On another note, using the LSI RAID controller with 8x Vertex 4's isn't giving me anywhere near the speed I thought it would. Trying to see if there is some sort of driver problem or what. Does anyone here have LSI card experience?

I don't think they're typos. It's listed in 2 different sections of the manual specifying either a 1/3/7 or 1/5/7 placement for the graphics cards. But I do agree that the pictures with 3-way SLI appear to have graphics cards in slots 1/3/5.

So it didn't come with a proper 3-way bridge using their recommended slots and it didn't come with a 4-way bridge at all?! what the....

It's most likely a software issue. I can dig into it in a couple of hours when I get home. I have to find out if this chip supports Fast Path.
