Random Packet loss and high jitter

Hello OCN,

(TL;DR VERSION AT THE BOTTOM)

I come to you today with a very odd problem.

For a while now when using programs that require internet usage (Teamspeak, Skype, Minecraft, Firefox etc) I have noticed that after a while things just kind of, stop.

When I can get Pingtest.net working during said occurrence, I get around 11-25% packet loss and 500-550ms with 340-375-jitter.

The internet connection itself does NOT cut off, it simply slows down and doesn't receive all of the packets.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and I am directly connected.

My motherboard has on board Nforce lan drivers.

I have a 100mbs Download and a 6mbs upload speed on a Docsis 3.0 Netgear cg3000d-rg gateway router.

A technician from my ISP (Charter) came out today and said that everything looked fine on his end and that everything was okay. As the problem is very picky as to when it happens (even though its more than once an hour) I could not reproduce it in front of him.

There are NO firmware updates (that I could find) for my gateway.

ANY AND ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED. I am an experienced user and am willing to use or try anything including registry editing (im just bad with networking)

TL;DR
My internet gets 25% packet loss and high ping in bursts every so often and it seems to be caused by using programs.
My ISP came out today and said everything was fine.

Modem/Gateway: Docsis 3.0 Netgear cg3000d-rg
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
LAN Drivers: nForce 750i
Speeds: 100mbs DL/6Mbs UL

NOTE: I am supposed to be getting 100mbs Download and 6 mbs upload!

Tested just now

you could try running a ping to 8.8.8.8 and dropping it to file over 24 hours, this would help map when the probelm is happening./

A few questions about your setup if you dont mind smile.gif (standard ^_^)

* Are you using WIFI

*Is there a switch inbetween you and the router

* have you tried with a different cable/port on router/differnt router/port on computer

* Is anyone on your network throtterling your network via things such as torrents

How exactly do I do that? I understand how to tracert etc but what is the 24 hour thing?

1. No
2. No
3. Yes, multiples
4. No one else is on the network.

I'd to traceroute instead of a ping over time as it will tell you more specifically which hop is introducing latency.

If the hops are within your ISP it's certainly worth a call.

Charter has been lately experiencing several issues in several states OP - I know because I'm in Nevada and have called several levels of technicians to find out (because of experiencing other but related issues to yours). They have been expanding into new systems to upgrade existing infrastructure to allow less-than-suburban areas more connectivity, including higher speed broadband and on-demand cable services to areas that have not previously been available in those areas.

Anyways, hope you find a solution. redface.gif

Did you set duplex manuallY? If not, set it (remember you have to set the same duplex on all connecting nodes). How is the hardware (nic/cables/router). Try swapping them. Pinging / tracerouting is ok but I prefer winmtr. It will give you the location of the problem.

Check if you get packet loss to your gateway as well. Both internal and external IP - however be careful with judging results from the external IP - if you get more than 1-2ms of latency, it's probably being routed all the way to your ISP and back again and the results might not be overly conclusive. If it's below 1ms, it's still being routed internally and shows that (in case you have problems) it's just your router having trouble. If you don't experience packet loss of ping spikes to your gateway, it's your ISP's problem or you have a defective router/modem (or both).

Call your internet provider. Odds are like 100/1 the problem is with your provider and your line.
