Samsung 830 128 Gb, Clean Install or OS transfer

Just Got my my SSD today/. I was going to do a clean install but I only have the Win 7 upgrade kit so a clean install wont work. I was wondering for anybody with the 830, does doing an OS transfer with Norton Ghost work?

Or is there a performance hit?

Btw my mobo is an X-58 Asrock Ext3 that has Marvell Sata 6 controllers, which I've heard are useless so I can only use SATA 3Gps so I'm even more worried about the performance hit

Ah I thought you meant performance hit from the clone. Can't attest to performance hits on SATA II but clone didn't seem to hurt anything.
I'm not even sure the 830 caps out SATA II. Lemme check

If your C:/ drive has <128 GB of data then use EaseUS to clone your drive to the SSD. Should work flawlessly, I've used it for HDD->SSD as well as SSD->SSD cloning.

You will need a spare flash drive though for EaseUS to store temporary files during the process. Be sure to click the button to "optimize for SSD"

If this is your first SSD, don't worry about a performance hit.. its performance is leaps and bounds over traditional HDDs. If you ever get around to testing Windows 8, be prepared for 20 second cold boots (6 seconds for OS itself, 16 seconds for BIOS screen etc. if you have an older revision mobo like I do)

Does Clonezilla allow you to clone only Windows OS or do you have to clone everything? My OS partition only has 150 Gb space out of 935 Gb left redface.gif

I think I just did a blind copy of everything. Not sure if that negatively affects the SSD life but I'm pretty confident I won't even own this thing for the 3 year warranty.

With my first SSD, I installed the OS on the SSD and made my old boot drive a storage drive. Left the Windows partition and everything lol

With my first SSD, I installed the OS on the SSD and made my old boot drive a storage drive. Left the Windows partition and everything lol

So windows won't have a license issue?
