9-pin serial port and new laptops.

Thread Starter
Well my old laptop just died. I have a few Automotive diagnostic tools, that need a native 9-pin serial. (or close to, USB-to-serial has never work for my tools.)

I know I can just grab a old used unit, but they are hard to find in good shape.

Replacing the Automotive diagnostic tools, is NOT an option. ($10,000 or so, just for a USB interface.)

SO any ideas?

Thank you.

If you would consider using a desktop, This motherboard has a serial port, and supports FX processors (I know, I know) tongue.gif

LOL, That may soon be the only option. However if I am in the field and need to record/diagnostic cars, it a little hard to lug all that crap around.

Portability is a necessity.

Thank you.

Ok. Firstly, let me tell you, I have met some really seriously naive serial ports in my day. Some went crazy, some didn't read right, and some were just smooth sailing with joysticks and gamepads. And while they were all naive for the most part, luckily none of 'em knew how many times they'd been beaten up.

Secondly, try to get one of these or one of these to use in your laptop - should work waaay better than a usb-to-serial device - it should work as native (and naive too).

As for a laptop, well, anything new or used with an open/working PCMCIA/Express port will work. thumb.gif

Thank you. That is a good solution. I thought PCMCIA were just as hard to find, as the serial port I am after. How are the ExpressCard to serial?

Express card replaced the PCMCIA port or standard I think, basically they're the same thing (though I assume the express port has more bandwidth or other features not present in the PCMCIA standard). I don't have any personal experience with them but I would think they should function just like a normal/native device. If you're unsure perhaps you could wait on someone who has used one. redface.gif

And I hope you didn't take my joke the wrong way, just messin'! tongue.gif

Nah, a little joke never hurt any one. Got to love the English language, one letter and the word has a different meaning. (I knew I spelled the naive/native, wrong but the point would get across.)

My mom has a laptop with ExpressCard port, I will try it out. Thanks. now to go to Best buy/Future Shop. (good return policy.)

The USB port has eliminated the serial port. Only problem is older programs and devices need IRQ 4 to find the port. There is one source for a new laptop with this port and that is the portablepc.com check out the notebook section get an I7 notebook with this port. Don't be shocked at the price.
