New Update! wheee.gif

Sorry it has been so long since my last update...between work, the holidays, family commitments...let's just say that life has been kookoo.gif Thanks to everybody that has stuck with me!

When I last updated, I was working on the front panel replacement. For those that have forgotten, here is what it looked like:

Needed to get the 140mm fan hole drilled

After center punch and pilot holes drilled

Tools of the trade

After a little oil and a lot of cutting

Rough cuts completed

After a little sanding, grinding, wheee.gif, and drilling the holes for the AQ5 brackets

This is how it will fit into the stock front panel (or what is left of it...)

Primer

My uber high tech drying rack

As always please feel free to comment and critique my handiwork and the general idea of what I am doing...

My next update will be tomorrow...working on the PSU mount!

I am doing sleeved PSU cables for both builds, and i thought I would show everybody my process...

First is to have a decent work space, here is mine:

A donor power cable:

You want to make sure that your power cable is at the minimum 18AWG. It will say what it is on the side of the insulation. I have also used 16 and 14AWG for my home theater components, it just depends on the power draw. Most PSUs come with 18AWG, so unless you are running a monster 1200-1500w PSU, you will be fine.

Tools of the trade. I use:

Side cutters
X-Acto knife
Wire stripper
Scissors
Measuring tool
Micro-Shear flush cutters

For the ends, I chose the Sonar Quest Rhodium plated IEC connector and US plug. I like them for their connection quality but really, any brand will do:

First thing is to cut the ends off the power cable. I like to do it as close to the connectors as possible so my cable isn't shortened very much:

Next up is to strip away the outside insulation about 1-1 1/2 inches:

Do this for both sides:

Next up is to connect one side to a connector:

If sleeving the cable, now would be an excellent time to select your color...I chose Shade 19 for this cable:

Feed the desired sleeve onto the cable. I like to put a bit of shrink onto the sleeving before I put it onto the wire, this helps keep the sleeve from slipping until the full connector is in place:

Once the sleeve is fed onto the wire (don't worry about a stretch just yet,) feed the outside of the connectors onto the wires, connect the other connector to the wires. Make absolutely sure you have the same wires going to the same connections on both sides:

Connect the outside body of the connector to one side. Make sure the sleeving is in the wire clamp. Do this by screwing tight the two screws on the face of the connector:

Screw the clamp for the wire in place tightly. These screws are located on the side of the connector body:

Once that is done, connect the outside body to the other connector

Stretch the sleeve and then tighten the wire clamp.

Cable should look like this when done:

I then recommend testing the cable with a multimeter...

Hope this helps a few people out....

Oh wow, even if it's just a small bit of handy work, that looks amazing biggrin.gif props to you! Any chance you'll show the PSU sleeving later on too? (I've been thinking about doing that with my AX850 mod cables, since it would help especially for HDD power cables, but I'm kinda worried about something going wrong like bad sleeve length, etc).
