Possibly new to AMD...

Thread Starter
Just wondering guys. I've been an nvidia person all my life but it seems AMD has the best deal for me right now as nvidia hasn't released a 660. Some have reccomended a HD 7850 to me... What does that compare to nvidia wise? Is it supposed to be the 660s competitor if it was actually released?

Sorry I don't know much about these cards compared to nvidia don't mean to offend. xD

I think it is the 570's competitor, but I am sure someone will come along to correct me.

It compares to a 560Ti 448c at stock, and beats a 580 after overclocking it heavily (which they will do). You can nearly match a stock GTX670 with one overclocked.

HD 7850 at stock speeds of 860 Mhz is slower than a GTX 570. But its a hell of an overclocker. At stock voltage it overclocks to 1 Ghz and is comparable to GTX 570 perf wise. With voltage tweaking at 1.2 Ghz its close to GTX 580 perf wise.

here is factory overclocked HD 7850 review

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_7850_PCS_Plus/9.html
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_7850_PCS_Plus/31.html

GTX 570 - 45.3
PCS+ HD 7850 (1 Ghz) - 45.4
HD 7870 (1 Ghz) - 49.5
PCS+ HD 7850(1.24 Ghz) - 50.2
GTX 580 - 51.7

some good HD 7850 cards are HIS Iceq HD 7850, Sapphire HD 7850 and MSI HD 7850 Twin Frozr.

Alright thank you. I'm not sure if I should just get this soon... Or wait for a 660... As I am enjoying skyrim right now plenty of game play left but you know.

whats your budget and which region are you from.

http://hothardware.com/News/AMD-Slashes-Prices-on-Radeon-7000-Series-Graphics-Cards/

Resellers are already reflecting these prices . AMD HD 7870 is looking quite attractive too. If you are in the US you can grab a MSI HD 7870 Twin Frozr for USD 280 after rebates.

US. There are a few 7850s for ~230. I buy used going to check the marketplace here too. But to me paying over 250 is pretty stupid for a gpu, that's just for me don't take any offence I'm frugal I don't buy ridiculous stuff. Hope the i3 doesn't bottleneck too much it's been doing quite amazing.

I'm guessing these are pretty good on power that they only have one connector? OC'd 7850 with an i5 (In the future) is easily handled by the HCG 520w?

Also I'm assuming overclocking and all that is pretty much the same process with the AMD cards as it is nvidia? Does AMD still run hotter and all that or are Nvidia and AMD pretty much on the same level now?

You could run crossfire HD7850's overclocked to the sky and back with an i7 on that PSU just fine. thumb.gif HD7850's draw around 120w or so at MOST heavily overclocked. Around 90-100w at stock.

And you won't have a bad "bottleneck" at all with that i3. My i3 keeps up with my 7970 just fine in gaming at 2560x1600.
