Best way to dye and paint IBM Model M?

Thread Starter
I recently purchased one of these keyboard, and I wanted to make it match my hardware setup color scheme (blue and black). I was thinking along the lines of the casing being black, and the keys a light-gray, and the lock LED's blue.

I tried dying my keycaps today with RIT dye, and I followed what a few guides said to do (bring water to a boil, add dye, add a bit of salt, dip keys in for 15 minutes, remove, wash, repeat a few times), but the keycaps didn't seem to be affected at all by the black dye. They even seem to be a light tint of brown now for some reason. The keys were soaked in dish soap for like 20 mins prior to being put in the dye. I noticed a plastic spoon I was using also didn't seem to take the dye, so maybe it's because of the type of plastic the keycaps are?

As for the casing, my plans were to clean it, and spray paint it with a cheap, flat (non-glossy) paint. I have to purchase a hex driver though (could of sworn I had one, but I guess not), so this will most likely be done after the keys.

Any recommendations and suggestions?

Krylon Fusion flat black is your best bet for the case, with the Rustoleum plastic spray next in line. One can will easily do a model M case with plenty left over. I've used both on a number of CM Storm Quickfires to cover up logos for myself and friends.

As far as the rit dye goes, I cannot comment. I've never used it.

Make sure the soap didn't leave any type of residue on the keycaps...even a barely noticeable thin film left by the soap will prevent the keycaps from taking up the dye. Next time, use some denture tab cleaners to clean the keycaps first. Then briefly rinse with rubbing alcohol, then water. Then try the dye again.

I'd try and dye the keyboard chasis first, before painting it. Just get a big disposable tinfoil pan (the kind you cook a Thanksgiving turkey in) and pour the hot, prepped dye mixture into the tinfoil pan. Make sure the dye fully covers the chasis. You may have to do this multiple times for the chasis...since the dye mixture will cool down in the tinfoil pan.

I just got some denture cleaning tabs now and I'm getting ready to try to clean the keys off again.

Well, the denture cleanser and rubbing alcohol combination worked wonders! The keys took the dye quite nicely the first dip, but I'm working on trying to get them pure black now. The original plan was to get them a light-grayish color, but they turned dark brown within the first minute. So at some point I suppose I'll have to get some key stickers or something (any recommendations on this would be great).

The dye I have is in a metal container, with a bit of salt and vinegar in the mix. Will this mix be able to be stored for a few days (maybe a week) until I can receive the proper tool to open the keyboard, and then dye the case?

My vote is for Krylon, that stuff bonds to plastic amazingly.

Also, the Rit dye is meant for stuff with a softer plastic (I've done it with lacrosse heads and the like), so pretty much plastic bonding spray paint is your bet.

The dye seems to of taken to the keys quite nicely. I first brought water to a boil, added in 1 full packet of the powered black RIT dye, and then threw in all the completely white keys (I left the grays out at first). I then decided to clean the gray keys, added more water to the pot, threw in some salt and vinegar, and then put the rest of the keys in (I used a strainer basket also).

I ordered a E-Flite Nut Driver, 5.5mm and ENGLISH US KEYBOARD STICKERS a little while ago, so hopefully those will both work out ok.

Here is my keyboard currently:

Those are looking great. I've been tempted to do the RIT dying on my WASD keys but I might just go ahead and buy them since only getting those is cheap. Any comments on the texture of the keys? Like do they feel greasy or anything like that?

Hmm, it feels about the same as it did normally I'd say (no greasy feeling or anything strange) smile.gif

That's good to hear. I've been thinking about doing the WASD, ESC, F, and J keys on my Black Widow but I've been worried about the letters. I know it shouldn't be a problem but I just worry that it's going to look funny with all the keys with numbers except for those. It would be pretty funny to watch someone type for the first time on a mechanical keyboard without any letters on the keys. haha
