Snerp's Xeon Build: Unlocked and Chilled - 12/05/06 update! - Page 12

You're system is an Intel ES system. How did you get hold of the board? I was looking for one a while ago to get this Cloverton ES (4 Core Xeon ES) into.

Intel test boards are not incredibly stable to be honest, I’ve seen numerous problems with them as they are only designed for testing purposes obviously.

Does the board contain an auxillary power connector?
What activates when power is restored?
Does the cooling system activate?

I got it from the guy that hooked up the ES chips. Random employee of Intel that was selling a Koolance kit on Craigslist. He handed me a Raptor, 2 boards and the chiller unit for free. I think I'll give the other board a run in the morning since this isn't going to work...only problem is the other board doesn't have a PCI-E Slot...

Yeah...I've heard that they do all kinds of fun stuff to them

What do you mean aux power connector?

When I flip the switch 3 LEDs on the board light up then go off and they pulse, a few fans do too.

I've got water setup on it.

An auxiliary power connector is used in case the Power Supply is incapable of powering the board from its main line. The auxiliary power will therefore come online to increase stability to the board and the components integrated onto itself.
The Auxiliary power connector will not be on every single board and sometimes will not be required.

Check to see if there is another power connection port on the board, if so connect power to it.

I will find my Intel Tech Manuals.

Can I have the board name please (Chipset/MCH/ICH).

Stay on topic please

Hey, Snerp, the white 4-pin connector in the upper right hand corner looks like an auxillary power block that takes a floppy plug:

I have the 24pin, 8pin and 4pin connected. I can't find any others. I was told the Chipset is i965. What is MCH/ICH please?

I already did, then it made one of the LEDs blink. I noticed that there were like 5 of the same plugs and was able to read one of them. They are the fan plugs...

MCH stands for Memory Controller Hub (Northbridge).
ICH stands for Input/Output (I/O) Controller Hub (Southbridge).

The big one on the top, to the left of the CPU reads:

NQ82005MCH
QJ72 ES
LS08A701

I can't read the small one on the bottom
