680 pre-purchase advise

Hello,
I would like to purchase a gtx 680 and think I have decided I want a 4gb version since I will be running 5760x1080. I would like to eventually be able to sli a second or even third. I would like to be able to oc my card since it has made a huge dif at times with my 6850s. I am looking at this card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162105
because of the specs and price vs an EVGA. I know I will probably have to water cool before I add a second one and it looks like a Hydrocooper or other waterblock would fit rite on the board just by compairing the two in pictures... I have become used to the simplicity of OC with afterburner type programs and am a little concearned that this card will come with no simmilar software (is there a good program I can download to do this with?) I am also a little concearned about the customer service that I may get if somthing does happen although I called customer service at 2am and somone quickly answered the phone and assured me that the card I said went out (was pretending) would be replaced but I had to submit it online rather than by the phone. Also one last question supposing I wanted to turn all my settings down and try out 3d vision surround am I correct in assuming that I could not do that with a single 680 since there is only two DVI outs?

You could use MSI afterburner or EVGA Precision, both are very simple. You have 2 DVI outs and a HDMI so you cold use that to run the third monitor.

Thanks... after hearing your advise I looked and you are correct however in my case since my monitors dont accept DP according to this

http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/nvidia-surround-on-the-geforce-gtx-680/#1

I would have to purchase a DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter (about $100.00)

Looks like I would be better off spending that hundred towards another 680..... but then I need to water cool or they will overheat rolleyes.gif thats a couple hundred for waterblocks + fittings..... crap the cycle started again lol

Hi, just purchased the Evga 680 FTW 4gb and am loving it, 60fps at 5760x1200 on auto video settings on BF3.
A couple of things i have noticed, 4gig is a good choice,
at this res(5760x1200) when i switch to ultra I only get 35-40fps but the more important thing is memory use goes up to 2.85 gig !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On auto it is only 1.75gig.
Overclocking only makes minimal gains, I've hade gpu to 1350mhz(stock 1189) and mem too 6410mhz(stock 6008) with only 5-6fps improvement, go SLI and be done with it.
Display port to DVI adaptors, I have two active and two passive. With Amd I had to use the active adaptor to run eyefinity, so i used that when i went Nvidia. But the other day i swapped the active adaptor for a passive one and low and behold it still works, so no you don't need to spend $100 on an adaptor.
I have had a Galaxy card in the past, was good but only sample case of one.
Hope this helps!!!

$100 ??? What are you looking at?

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=692995

I use this for triple screen + 1: 2 x dvi to monitor dvi, 1 x dp to monitor dvi (above cable), and 1 x HDMI to 42" TV

Nvidia does not need active dp connections, any combination of outputs can be used for 2D surround, if you want 3D surround it must be DP and DVI with capable monitors of course

Another note: I get the same FPS on ultra at 5760x1080 as stated above, more graphics memory will be used but it not necessary and there is not a difference in FPS performance stated above on the 4Gb version v my 2Gb version.

I guess I dont know that much about these adapters... is the one you linked to a dual link DVI? because it looks like the price of a single link? Also whats the difference in passive and active?

Heres a link talking about that:
http://www.overclock.net/t/721931/active-vs-passive-displayport-adapters-the-truth

AMD needs active Nvidia does not.

Its dual 355

Its the one II ordered and use, before it came I did use 2 x DVI and 1 x HDMI which does work but a small thing that irritated me was the HDMI was a second slower in switching apps, there was no difference in game but exiting, entering games, going to sleep mode the HDMi would do it a second after the 2 DVI, no performance lost just anal thing that bugged me.

Sorry, what I meant to say was when running Surround, at 5760x1200 and SLI then the 4gig in the card would make a big difference. If mine uses 2.85 gig then SLI at a higher framerate would certainly use more.
Is it the same as eyefinity when using Xfire that you only use the Vram in the lead 1st first card ie;4 gig

Next time I will get it written right the first time!!
