Help needed with i7-3280 - possibly bad chip

Thread Starter
I have recently purchased an Asrock x79 Extreme 4-M motherboard, the intel i7-3820 and a Noctua NH-D14 cooler to go with it.

It took me a while to configure everything and get all the drivers to work properly, but i immediately noticed problems with the CPU when running Tribes Ascend for the 1st time. The game would be running at about 10fps, which is extremely low. I shut the game down and proceeded to run a 3DMark11 test to confirm my suspicions. Games ran pretty normally after then, but the chip is still under preforming by a lot. Any help towards solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the results to the test:
  • The benchmark score at stock CPU speeds. The score is almost 1000 lower than what i have seen other users have on their stock speeds for the 3820
    http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3882042
  • The benchmark score at a 4.6Ghz overclock. The score is STILL lover than normal stock speeds, despite the nearly 1Ghz OC.
    http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3885624

Once a solution to the above problem would be found, I'd still require a lot of help with overclocking this CPU. As this mobo has an entirely different bios than the old ones, i haven't got the 1st clue as to how to get high overclocks.

Additional info:
The CPU temps run at 40°C idle and 68°C under load when OCed to 4.6Ghz, so i don't think that is the problem.
The bios is flashed to the latest version. I haven't messed around with the voltage of the chip yet.

My specs are as follows:
  • Sapphire 7970 Dual X OC running at 1125/1575, stock voltage
  • Energon 750W power supply
  • Asrock x79 Extreme 4-M motherboard
  • 2x4GB ram, Kingston HyperX (rated at 1600, i think)
  • Intel i7-3280
  • Noctua NH-D14 cooler

Thanks in advance for any help

Yeah, physics score for both stock & overclock too low (roughly 1000 less). I don't think CPU is faulty. I believe CPU is throttling for unknown reason. Try reset all settings in BIOS to default.

Restored BIOS defaults, here's the score:

http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3890703

Still very low i think...

Also, how can i make sure my RAM is rated 1600? because i see the PC set it to 1333 instead, maybe that's causing the issue.
What is the exact model of your RAM? For example KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX. Probably you need to enabled XMP profile in BIOS. Anyway, this is not the problem. I suspect your CPU doesn't Turbo Boost. Try disabled SpeedStep & C1E in BIOS. Then checked using CPU-Z. See whether CPU frequency is at 3.8GHz or not. If yes, run benchmark again.

After overclocking the CPU to 4.6 I'm getting a mere 10k in 3dmark11... http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3892021

Any ideas as to what else i could try? Am i overclocking it wrong?
Did you tried my suggestion from previous post? If it works, it will forced CPU to run at highest multiplier. If it works & benchmarks improved, then you can rule out CPU & motherboard.

Sounds like your VRMs are overheating on your board which causes your CPU to downclock. Get some fans on them it should help. Also that PSU is crap. I know you're not running CrossFire or SLI but it's a ticking time bomb waiting to take out the rest of your components - just saying.

I did manage to somewhat fix the problem now. Turns out my RAM was not fast enough to keep up with the CPU, overclocking it to 1666 gave me a much more decent score: http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3893078

As for the PSU, i know it is not the best brand, but it has served me well for the past two years and the voltage seems ok. Since i don't really have an extra 100€ to spend on something that doesn't desperately need to be replaced, I'll stick with this one for the time being.

For the record, I did try disabling C1E and SpeedStep and the results didn't improve from that.

The score still too low.

For the PSU, you should start looking to new one & better/reputable brand. This PSU have bad history. There are a lot of good brand of PSU that doesn't cost you too much. I'd go for cheap CPU, motherboard, RAM, etc but will never gamble with PSU.

I agree with SimpleTech, you need to put a fan to cool down the VRMs. Cooler VRMs means longer life-span.
