New Harddrive +New OS help

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
Hello all, been awhile since I have frequented these forums. So Hi.

The question I'm having is: Would it be possible to upgrade to a 64 bit OS on a new Harddrive whlie still being able to use the 32 bit applications on the previous hard drive?. Such as my current one with all my games would become a secondary hard drive, and the new one would be an OS/primary drive. Would there be any compatibility issues in doing so?

Also, being unfamiliar with hardware again, what would be a good quality hard drive to get from newegg or such for as inexpensive as possible while still having a large capacity(300+gigs if possible). Non-refurbished only.

Thanks, Any help is appreciated

64-bit operating systems will run both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. There is no need to install a 64-bit operating system on a separate drive for that purpose. You can simply upgrade the OS you have now to the 64-bit version. And the drive in which you keep the applications doesn't really matter in regards to performance unless you are talking about a solid state disk, which wouldn't be worth the money at >300gb; you would be better off upgrading your processor or video card.

If you are still looking for a hard drive for the purpose of expanding your storage, keep in mind that Samsung drives are made by Seagate now and Hitachi drives are made by Western Digital now. Both are alright companies, so any of those 4 brands are alright. (Just keep an eye out to make sure it's not a 5400rpm "green" drive, "intellipower", etc. I wouldn't game on those.)

@Eiko

From when i've tried installing it over the 32 bit I have currently, it wants to do a clean installation. It does not give any option to Upgrade. So there shouldn't be any issue in regards to having windows 7 32 bit installed on a secondary hard drive and just primary booting with a fresh 64 bit?. I ask because my current harddrive has ~50% of it filled of 688 GB, and I can get a free copy of windows 7 64 bit. I was wanting to weigh the cost/reward in installing 64 bit over my 32 bit, but I can't due to the fact it wants a clean installation.

Any tips?

If you install a 64-bit copy of Windows on a drive, you will have to re-install the programs you had on the previous operating system anyways with the exception of stand-alone applications (ones you never had to install). So my advice is to back up your files to a separate drive, removable media, or even just a partition; and install your 64-bit OS. Basically what I'm saying is that you will have to re-install all of those games anyways; even if you installed the 64-bit version over top of the 32-bit version (it would stick the old OS files in C:/Windows.old).
