IE7 a "Priority" update through Windows Update..?

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I went to Windows update after being directed to by the update icon in the taskbar and found that IE7 is a "priority" update for Windows... See Below:

Now, I almost always update Windows with priority updates, because I’m not keen on running an OS with loads of security holes in it, but in this instance, can IE7 really be considered a priority update? Is IE6 so riddled with security problems that an update to IE7 is the only way to make Windows more secure?

When I selected the option for Windows update not to show me the IE7 update again, I got this:

Is IE7 really worth updating to? Is it really all that more secure than IE6? Does it use more system resources? Idk if I really want IE7 as I'm quite content with IE6... Is IE7 really a priority update, or are MS just using the Windows update facility to push their browser to users?

Help and advice would be appreciated.

Highly-Annoyed

ie7 is nice - lots of new features over 6 such as tabbed surfing. Personally I think the new Firefox 2.0 is better.

You're going to have to update sooner or later, because, well this is Microsoft we're talking about. I got it when it came up, it's not like I ever use it.

OK... Well, thanks for your replies and advice. I installed IE7 on my partner's PC because it's supposed to be more secure than IE6 and it's best she has the most secure software on her machine.

My first impressions after using it for 3 minutes are:

It's slower to start-up than IE6.
It looks like it's still in beta.
The IE program icon is now ugly.
The control icons now look less professional.

Overall, IE7 feels like another MS software facelift. Sadly though, this time it looks (at least to me) like the facelift went horribly wrong. Is this some kind of joke? The program looks like it's still in beta, or as if the programmers didn't quite finish in time and just rushed it out anyway. Maybe IE7 has got better functionality and security than IE6, I'm not too sure about that, but so far, I am far from impressed.

What really bugs me most though, is that, for XP users, this seems to be a forced update from IE6. I know MS are still supporting IE6, because I've got a 2K machine and the IE6 on that got security updates for it in the last 12 hours. Even though I'm still running IE6 on my main PC though, there are no security updates available for it from MS update. So, essentially, if I don't "upgrade" to IE7, my XP machine will be running a less secure version of IE6 than if it were a 2K machine, still getting IE6 updates...

Where the heck is the consumer choice? What if I don't actually want IE7, but still want a "secure" version of IE6 on my XP box?

If I don't get some security updates for IE6 on my XP machine within the next month, I'm going to be downloading and trying firefox, something I never thought I'd have to do. Why the heck do MS have to mess with stuff that actually works. IE6 may have never been a perfect browser, but at least it has a clean, simple GUI with the minimum of superfluous graphic effects, buttons and other junk. What the heck are MS taking these days? Didn't they ever hear that the key to good design is to keep things simple .

Hell yeah - I updated as soon as it was available.
Since then I have clicked the IE shortcut precisely ZERO (naught, nil, nada, 0, *the number that separates the minuses from the plusses) times!

/me loves his Firefox and SwiftFox

Hmmm, it's odd. IE6 used to spring open and load google on my partner's machine in about 1.00 to 1.50 seconds. IE7 seems to take about 2.50 to 3.25 seconds to do the same thing on the same hardware. It doesn't sound like much of a difference when you read it, but it is pretty perceptible. It also seems to open web pages a little slower as well, although that is barely noticeable so far.

It just looks so, unfinished and unpolished. MS has got so much money, yet IE7 looks so, beta. Must be some really lazy devs over in the MS IE7 dept... I've seen free software with a better conventional GUI...
