Asus Rampage IV Formula Strange Problem - Please help

Hi everyone,

I just built my system with the Asus Rampage Iv Formula and an i7 3930k with water cooling.

All has worked well up until now.

Basically, I left the pc running for maybe an hour. When I returned to check it out, the computer appeared to be in some sort of power save or sleep mode. The fans were not spinning, no lights were on, and the worst part, I believe the pump was not operating.

The monitor had a black screen from no input, and the power led button on the case was flashing at a constant rate.

I pushed a button on the keyboard, and the pc instantly woke up and all fans started spinning.

I have a Logitech g510 keyboard with the EVGA precision app on it, and the cpu temp read 123 degrees Celsius. F*** ME.

I previously had the CPU overclocked to 4.5Ghz, and the Vcore set at 1.38 volts. Temps stayed around 20-24c under normal operation.

So I immediately shut down the PC, and cleared cmos to remove the overclock.

Then I rebooted, and the system runs fine now, with stable temps.

I have no idea how long after I left the PC running when it went into this "sleep mode", but I figure my CPU must have been running over 100c for quite some time. Did this certainly cause permanent damage?

Any ideas on why my motherboard does this "sleep mode"?

Thanks a lot.

Have you checked the power settings on windows. (Assuming this is a windows rig). Sleep mode in windows is defaulted to on. So If you did not change it, that's where I'll look first.

I don't think the CPU temp was on 123c, unless you disable it, thermal throttling should have kicked in and would have shut down the PC. Well, if it's working fine now. I say keep the CPU. You could make up some excuse and have the CPU replaced on the place where you bought it.

The CPU thing happened to me on an old q6600. The fans were stuck and I did not notice it. Hanged due to thermals. But after that the CPU went on to live for 4 more years and it's still alive now. So I say don't sweat it.
