Intel DX79SR PCI Express Question

Thread Starter
I will be doing a new build soon and have a question about PCI express on the DX79SR Mobo. I plan on having two GTX 690 video cards in SLI. Nvidia recommends at least a one PCI slot gap between the cards for cooling, but If I do that then the video cards will be covering both PCI X1 slots. I will be using a PCI 1X sound card, and know from experience that you can inset them into a 16X slot with no issues, but I do not know if that will throw off both my video cards from running in 16X mode. Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Actually looking at the pictures from newegg I wonder is the third pci 3.0 slot always runs in 8X mode as it says 16x,16x, 8x. I originally thought that may have been for a tri SLI setup, but I read elsewhere that tri SLI runs at 16x/8x/8x on this mobo... I am now concerned. So I guess my question changes to: If I were to put SLI video cards into the 1st and 3rd PCI 3.0 slots would they both run at 16X, and If I were to add a 1X PCI express sound card into the second 3.0 slot would that affect the speed of the other two 3.0 slots?

Of course not the third 3.0 slot will not run in 16X, or of course not the sound card will not affect the speed of the other two?

Your GPU's will run at x16 and the soundcard would run at x8.

You also have another PCI x1 slot near the bottom for the soundcard.

The bottom 1X slot would be covered by the second video card if it were in the third PCI 3.0 slot. But thank you for your reply smile.gif

I have the PC up and running now, but I highly doubt the second video card is running at 16X. Every section in the user guide that comes with the motherboard says "PCI Express 3.0 X16 (8X electrically)" whenever is describes the third PCI 3.0 slot.

Did you do any benchmark comparisons having it in the middle and then bottom slot? I've read that on older cards there was a minor slowdown, perhaps 2% or so. If that is the case, perhaps worth the pain IF your cards run nice and cool.

I'm faced with exact same concern on the DX79SR with a 2nd GTX 690 on the way. I'm also interested which sli bridge you used to do this. The one Nvidia used when they released the 690s shows them on the DX79SR with a very sweeet SLI bridge going between them, using the slots you are using (in the board manual, page 13 - slots labeled I and D).
