I'm saying there's no need to pay 150 bucks a year for Super Ultra Mega Awesome VirusGuardShield9000 Ultimate Edition. MSE is free and lightweight, and I use it only for a once monthly manual scan.

Also, keeping Windows up to date helps too.

Kaspersky is miles better than MSE and easily worth $12 (not $150 or even $50) for just the AV.

If we're talking just an AV, here's arguably the best paid for $14 on 3 PCs.

I haven't had a virus or any kind of malware detected on my computer since limewire went away a few years ago. I used that program a lot to download movies for deployment and it was an infested nightmare. Now I pretty much only visit the same sites and don't download anything besides games from steam/origin so I stopped using any AV besides MSE, which I only use to do a manual scan now and again. If there is something living on my machine, it certainly has no effect on it so I simply don't care.

Why on earth does anyone need ot overpay for Norton, especially when it's possible it will knacker your PC (which has happened a few times over the years)?

Ive NEVER had an issue with Nortonand had it for years. Had Avast! for a week and my machine slowed to a crawl and a number of programs got screwed up. In two days.

Better is relative, and detection rates are only part of the equation when it comes to an AV or suite being "good". Many suites that have very high detection rates are garbage as far as usability and how nicely they play with the OS and programs installed on it.

There are good free AVs. There's no denying that. I've tried Comodo's HIPS though, and it gave me a few problems. Kaspersky has a great HIPS that I've been using for a bit now, and their detection rates have stayed consistently great for years. And, of equal importance, it plays very nicely with my system. I haven't had a single issue with it.

That $50-75/year is a bit of an exaggeration. I've shown a good paid AV or suite can be had for next to nothing.

I've run Avast! for 5+ years on numerous systems (every single one in the house) without a problem.

There are good free AVs. There's no denying that. I've tried Comodo's HIPS though, and it gave me a few problems. Kaspersky has a great HIPS that I've been using for a bit now, and their detection rates have stayed consistently great for years. And, of equal importance, it plays very nicely with my system. I haven't had a single issue with it.

Yes, such as "totally free" . Avast! have the philosophy that it costs nothing to get a virus, so it shouldn't cost anything to protect from them. Over the last 7 years I've not had a virus infection on my personal machine once due to diligence and protection. But paying money, anything at all, for AV protection isn't something I'm happy with.
