Looking for a decent gaming laptop for college

Thread Starter
I'm going off to college in a few months and it's time for a new laptop, so I'd appreciate any help.
  • 15.6'' screen
  • $800 max
  • not an HP (overheating problems)
  • capable of playing recent games at a decent graphic setting with good FPS
  • dedicated graphics card
  • appropriate amount of RAM for ^

Also, will a 1366x768 resolution be a problem?

Has a 17 inch screen like you want and dedicated video card.

Or if you want more power but not as large screen. 15.6inch lappy.

Thanks for the reply! I'm actually shying away from the 17''+ range because of the lack of portability. I'll be bringing the laptop around quite often so I can see that being a problem. Also, with my price range, how well do you think a laptop could perform with games?

Laptops arn't very good for gaming but I know dell laptops are very nice and last a long time.

Yeah, I know I'm pretty limited and I normally would get a desktop, but I need a laptop to use for college as well so I have to compromise. In terms of gaming, does it actually matter if I have a dual-core or quad-core CPU?

Usually with the CPU's that come out these days, GPU is what matters mostly. CPU shouldn't be a problem if you have the i5 or i7 2nd or 3rd gen.

What about the GT 630M? I'm coming from a 230M so anything is an upgrade, but I still want to be able to play games at a good FPS.

How about the HP dv6t-7000? Personally, not a huge fan of HP quality, but it looks like a good deal.

The 15 inch laptop I linked to can play all current games. Or at least most.

Do you like dell? I bought Dell XPS 15 L502X laptop last month, it's really nice, see review here, it features a i7-2450M processor and GeForce GT 525M, the price is under 800, may suit for you.
