Generally screen freezes are either GPU or RAM issues. Generally, an unstable CPU OC will cause a BSOD, not a freeze. I currently have a GTX460 that will not run if overclocked. If I try to run it OCed (at all), it will freeze like you have discribed. Do you have your GPU or RAM overclocked? If so, knock them back down to stock and try again. If you don't have them overclocked, try setting your RAM on setting lower (if you are running 1600, drop it down to 1333) and try again. If this gets it stable, you know its the RAM.
If you don't have either one overclocked (and lowering the RAM clocks doesn't work), I'm not sure what the problem may be, but I can tell you from experience, I've never seen an unstable CPU OC cause a system freeze (except at the Win boot screen, never once the OS is booted). There is always the possibility that I am wrong on this, I've just never seen it myself.
